Reddit is making going through long threads much easier with AI

AI chatbots are currently helping millions of users on iPhones and Android phones write text, create images and more. All of this is possible due to the ability of artificial intelligence models to understand language and converse with us. However, there’s another use case AI models are great at, and that is summarisation.

Reddit, one of the biggest forums for well, everything, gets this. The platform has announced its plans to use AI to summarise threads and make quick work of long threads filled with hundreds of posts.

The move makes a lot of sense. Reddit is a great source of both crowd-sourced information as well as opinions. That also means a lot (and we mean, a lot) of thoughts on simple threads. If you want to know how many people prefer pineapple on pizza, for instance, going through over 2,000 posts may not be as tasteful.

AI can summarise all these posts and give you a concise summary of how divided the internet is on the matter. In case Reddit takes this step further and adds a chatbot in there, you may even be able to ask the platform questions based on the thread, although that doesn’t seem very likely right now.

Summarised Reddit posts: When will the feature go live?

As per a TechRadar report, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said that the company will begin testing search result pages powered by AI later this year.

The report also mentions that the platform will use both third-party AI models as well as first-party AI models (Reddit’s very own) to power its AI features. Remember, the platform does have a deal with OpenAI (the company that made ChatGPT) that lets it use its models for AI features.

More concrete details on how the feature will work, whether it will be limited to search results, and when exactly we will be able to try the same are currently unavailable. Until then, there are a few online tools and Chrome extensions that claim they can do the summarising for you. However, we haven’t really tested any of them yet.
