Red Dead Redemption finally coming to the Nintendo Switch, PS4

Rockstar Games, the developer behind the popular Grand Theft Auto or GTA series is known for making few other games. If there is one non-GTA title you recognise the brand for, it is probably the Red Dead Redemption series. Originally released for the Sony PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, the iconic title, which has since had a sequel, is now set to come to newer gaming consoles.

Rockstar Games has just announced that the original Red Dead Redemption will be available for PlayStation 4 and the handheld Nintendo Switch consoles. The game will be available on both platforms from August 17 next week.

What is Read Dead Redemption?

For the uninitiated, Read Dead Redemption is Rockstar Games’ hit title from 2010 that follows the tales of protagonist John Marston, and is an open-world game set in the wild west. A fresh break from the realistic depictions of cities in the GTA games, Red Dead Redemption goes back to the early 1900s and is set in a fictional land loosely based on the Rio Grande Basin in Texas.

While Red Dead Redemption coming to Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 4 will come as good news to many fans of the series waiting to try the game on their last-gen or handheld console, the title continues to be out of reach for PC gamers.

Unlike other popular games like Sony’s Spider-Man series or 2018’s God of War, for which official PC ports have brought rejoice to the PC gaming community, there is still no official port of the original Red Dead Redemption for PC.

However, PC gamers can enjoy the sequel, 2018’s Read Dead Redemption 2, for which a port has been available since November 2019.

PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch not getting a remastered version of the game

You’d be forgiven for thinking that the PS4 and Nintendo Switch versions of the game will be a remastered version of the original 2010 game. However, Rockstar Games has made it clear that the new release is merely a ‘conversion’ and not a remaster. This means gamers can expect original level of graphics on the game as was a part of the 2010 title launched for the PlayStation 3.

Red Dead Redemption on the Switch and the PS4 will also include the Undead Nightmare expansion pack, which allows players to also enjoy an alternate version of the game where Marston “fights to survive a relentless zombie horde” while he searches for a cure. The game will cost $49,99 (about Rs 4,139), but we will have to wait until next week for the exact Indian price of the port.
