Done with Google Maps? 10 reasons to try Apple Maps

With a user base of over one billion, Google Maps is the most widely preferred web mapping and navigation service. Apple Maps has a comparatively smaller user base than Google Maps, mainly because it is only available on Apple devices.

When Apple Maps was introduced in 2012, it faced criticism due to issues like unreliable navigation and mapping errors. In 2024, it has become one of the most reliable options for navigation.

In India, Apple uses map data from an India-based navigation firm named MapmyIndia. This allows Apple Maps to function accurately in the country, even in smaller towns and villages.

Top 10 features of Apple Maps

Apple Maps is said to store less user data when compared to Google Maps. In addition, if you have multiple Apple devices, Apple Maps works flawlessly with services like Siri and iMessage. If you are considering switching to Apple Maps, here’s a look at its top 10 features:

1. Focus on privacy

Apple Maps ensures the privacy of its users by offering end-to-end encryption for personal data like Significant Locations and collections, so even Apple can’t read them. Additionally, when you share your ETA with other Maps users, Apple ensures your location remains private and secure.

2. Deep integration with Apple services and devices

Apple Maps offer seamless integration across devices like iPhone, Watch, iPad, or Mac, which makes it easier to access saved locations and navigation history. In addition, it works flawlessly with Siri voice assistant and iMessage.

3. Clean interface

Apple Maps looks less cluttered, which makes it easier to view navigational information and access its different features.

4. Detailed maps

By relying on map data from MapmyIndia, Apple Maps can offer precise search results and accurate navigation in rural regions and in areas with complex road layouts. India’s infrastructure is rapidly developing. MapmyIndia’s regular map updates ensure that Apple Maps quickly reflects changes in roads, construction zones, and new businesses.

5. Real-time traffic updates

Like Google Maps, Apple Maps is also capable of showing real-time traffic updates. This allows users to find congestion-free routes to reach a destination via the fastest route.

6. Look Around

The Look Around feature on Apple Maps is similar to Google Maps’ Street View. It provides users with 360-degree panoramic views of a location, allowing them to virtually explore the area and see what’s around them.

7. Indoor Maps

Whether you’re navigating through a mall or an airport, Apple Maps also offers indoor map layouts to help you find your way around.

8. 3D view of cities

There is a 3D icon on the mini toolbar available at the top-right corner of Apple Maps. Tapping the icon renders the area in 3D, providing a view of the buildings and landmarks.

9. Flyover mode

The Flyover mode available in Apple Maps gives a bird’s-eye view of the city. Only a few cities currently support the feature.

10. Offline maps

Apple Maps allows users to download maps for offline access. This not only lets users save on data, but also access navigation in areas with poor cellular connectivity.
