Qualcomm Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 announced for mid-range smartphones

Qualcomm recently announced the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3, its latest chip in the Snapdragon 7-series. Built for mid-range and upper-mid-range devices. The new chipset will pack performance improvements over previous entries in the 7-series. Additionally, the chipset also brings one of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s best features – on-device AI.

Here’s all you need to know about the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3, and what you can expect from upcoming smartphones running on the chipset.

Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3: What’s new?

The new Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 comes with on-device AI support thanks to a built-in NPU (neural processing unit). The NPU will also support several LLMs (Large Language Models) and LVMs (Large Vision Models). This makes the chipset capable of multi-language translation and transcription, without the need of any cloud-based computing over a network.

AI is not the only improvement on the new chip. The new Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3’s Kryo CPU and Adreno GPU come with 15 per cent and 45 per cent more power, respectively. The main core of the chip can go up to 2.8GHz, while the four performance cores clock up to 2.6GHz. These are the cores that will help multi-task, run heavy apps or play high-end games.

There are also three efficiency cores clocking 1.9GHz, which will keep the phone running while consuming lesser battery during lower workloads and during idle states.

Support for newer, more powerful hardware

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 comes with support for up to 24GB LPDDR5x RAM and UFS 4.0 storage speeds. A new post-processing accelerator for games helps deliver visual effects like bloom, depth, and motion blur. Meanwhile, ‘Adreno Frame Motion Engine 2.0’ helps improve the frame-rate of on-screen content.

Coming to the cameras, the new Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 supports up to 36MP triple camera setups. It will also support 64MP + 36MP dual camera setups or a single 108MP. It will also support capturing up to 200MP photos. Other features include AI-powered face detection, which should make edge detection more accurate, Google Ultra HDR photo capture, 4K HDR video capture, and more.

The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 is also the first in the 7-series to support Wi-Fi 7, while also supporting 5G networks with its Snapdragon X63 5G modem. For displays, the chip will support up to QHD+ displays at 120Hz and 4K resolution displays at up to 60Hz. Display certifications natively supported include HDR10, HDR10+, HDR Vivid and Dolby Vision.

Which phones to expect the chip on?

A report by 91Mobiles confirms that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 will power upcoming smartphones by Realme and OnePlus. While we have no confirmation on which models these are, we assume it could be the upcoming OnePlus Nord 4 series and the next Realme GT Neo series phones.

More concrete information about smartphones that will power the new Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 will be available in the upcoming months, as and when these devices near a launch date.
