OpenAI’s GPT-4o mini aims to slash the cost of using AI

ChatGPT has been synonymous with artificial intelligence for a while now, and the company has made several strides through the past year. Only a few months ago, the company introduced its ChatGPT-4o ‘Omni’ LLM at its “Feels Like Magic” event, which is said to flaunt multi-modal capabilities. However, in a more recent development, OpenAI introduced a cheaper, lighter iteration called GPT-4o mini, which is said to be much more capable than GPT-3.5.

What is OpenAI's GPT-4o mini?

OpenAI introduced GPT-4o with the ability to perceive and process video and speech, along with text and images just like GPT-4 Turbo. With GPT-4o mini, the company aims to bridge the gap for developers looking for a significantly cheaper Large Language Model (LLM) for their smartphone and other applications.

In a blog post, the company stated that the new model has been introduced with an aim to expand the range of applications built using AI. Apart from that, it states how GPT-4o mini is also meant to make artificial intelligence more affordable and accessible to a larger audience. GPT-4o mini even outperforms GPT-4 on chat preferences, OpenAI adds. 

What can GPT-4o mini do?

GPT-4o mini may be able to build itineraries or respond to prompts or simple tasks. As per OpenAI’s statement, the new model is likely to perform a wide range of tasks with its low cost and latency.

It could also be a part of applications that link multiple model calls, or interact with customers using quick, real-time text answers via support chatbots. Although GPT-4o mini supports text for now, OpenAI mentions how image, video, and audio inputs and output support will roll out to the model later in the future.

The new model will also support up to 16K output tokens (approximately 98,304 characters, or six characters per token) and will have a knowledge cut-off of up to October 2023. Users of ChatGPT Plus, Free, and Team plans will be able to access GPT-4o mini in place of GPT-3.5 in the coming days. Apart from this, Enterprise users will also have access to the model starting next week.
