OnePlus Open vs Oppo Find N3: Comparing the new foldable phones

OnePlus officially entered the foldable smartphones market with its OnePlus Open. A typical 2023 folding phone, the OnePlus Open ticks all the boxes you’d expect it to – top-end specifications, an outer display, a hinge that minimises the crease, and a price that most people will not pay for a smartphone.

However, for enthusiasts who will consider paying big bucks for a cutting-edge device that peeks into the future of the smartphone form factor, the next dilemma is the competition. The OnePlus Open rivals foldables like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, among others, but perhaps its closest nemesis is the Oppo Find N3, which features near-identical specifications. If you’re ready to invest in a new foldable, here’s a deeper look at the difference between the OnePlus Open and the Oppo Find N3.

OnePlus Open vs Oppo Find N3: Design

The OnePlus Open and the Oppo Find N3 feature the same design, comprising of a foldable form factor with 7.82-inch inner folding display and a 6.31-inch outer display. Both phones feature a glass sandwich design with metal sides and a large circular camera module on the back which takes up about a third of the rear (when folded).

The phones also feature an alert slider on the side, a USB 3.1 Type-C port, Dolby Atmos-powered stereo speakers and a side-mounted, capacitive fingerprint sensor that you can use both in the folded and the unfolded modes. Both devices also come with an IR-blaster to control TVs and other appliances.

OnePlus Open vs Oppo Find N3: Displays

Both the OnePlus Open and the Oppo Find N3 come with a 7.82-inch 2K main AMOLED display which comes with 120Hz and a peak brightness of up to 2,800 nits. The LTPO 3.0 panels on both phones can also adapt the phone’s refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz depending on the usage.

The secondary display on both devices is a 6.31-inch 2K AMOLED panel as well, again with LTPO 3.0. However, this display can only go down till 10Hz. Thankfully, you still get the same peak brightness of 2,800 nits.

OnePlus Open vs Oppo Find N3: Internal specifications

The OnePlus Open and the Oppo Find N3 are both powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and come with an X70 5G modem, the same one that powers the 5G on the iPhone 15 Pro series. With 16GB LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB storage, the phones don’t really differ on the specifications either.

This extends to the battery as well, because both the devices sport a 4,805mAh dual-cell battery which supports the brand’s 67W SuperVOOC fast wired charging, but surprisingly doesn’t feature wireless charging at all.

OnePlus Open vs Oppo Find N3: Software

The first real change between the two phones comes in the form of the software. While the OnePlus Open is powered by OxygenOS 13.2 out-of-the-box, the Oppo Find N3 comes with ColorOS 13.2.

Both UIs are based off Android 13 and actually even share the same codebase, but differ on the surface. Expect the same settings, menus, customisation options and apps that you’ve seen on the latest OnePlus flagships on the OnePlus Open but be prepared for a slightly different look-and-feel on the Oppo Find N3.

OnePlus Open vs Oppo Find N3: Cameras

Moving back to identical specifications, we have the camera modules of the OnePlus Open and the Oppo Find N3, both of which consist of a 48MP main camera with OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation), a 64MP 3x optical zoom telephoto lens, and a 48MP ultrawide lens.

There are also two front cameras, one on the main and another on the outer display. The main display front camera is a 20MP camera while the one on the outer display is a 32MP one.

Pricing and availability

Another big difference between the OnePlus Open and the Oppo Find N3 comes down to pricing and availability. This is because the Oppo Find N3 has been launched only in select markets, while the OnePlus Open is expected to be more widely available, including in India.

The OnePlus Open is priced at Rs 1,39,999 and is available in two colours – Emerald Dusk and Voyager Black. The Oppo Find N3, on the other hand, is available in Champagne Gold and Classic Black colours for a price of SGD 2,399 (about Rs 1,45,300). Some other phones you can pick up for around the same price include the iPhone 15 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5.
