The OnePlus Open was among the best foldables of last year. With the right mix of powerful hardware and software that leveraged the wider inner display, the OnePlus Open was a productivity marvel. However, as the phone slowly starts to get older, it also means the next iteration of the device has some really big shoes to fill. With a rumoured launch next year in 2025, here’s what you can expect from the OnePlus Open 2.
Improved specifications
The OnePlus Open 2 is likely to feature a more powerful processor, as most next-gen devices. In this case, that could be the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, a phone that’s expected to go big on both performance and build on the AI abilities of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. It remains to be seen what new abilities the foldable form factor along with the new chip open up.

Besides this, the OnePlus Open 2 is also expected to feature a bigger battery. As per a new leak by Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station, the phone could sport a 6,000mAh battery – a size that’s big even for regular smartphones. Between the split battery design and the other challenges associated with building a foldable, it remains to be seen how OnePlus manages to fit such a big battery in the device.
New hinge
One of the best aspects of the OnePlus Open was the hinge, which involved fewer moving parts than competitors at the time, allowing it to be more resistant to wear-and-tear, and other issues. More details are not available at the moment, but we expect a hinge that’s even more durable, resistant to dust, and one that’s perhaps easier to repair in case of accidents.
Of course, improvements in the hinge are key to the betterment of any foldable. A more compact hinge allows for further improvements in aspects like the battery, cameras and the overall structural integrity of a foldable.
Better cameras
Lastly, the OnePlus Open 2 is likely to feature bigger and better cameras that could outdo the cameras on the OnePlus Open. Camera quality on foldable phones has been good in the past few years but hasn’t really competed with the sensors on flagship phones.

The Galaxy Z series, for instance sport great cameras, but cannot achieve the feats of the Galaxy S24 Ultra. We will have to wait and see if the OnePlus Open 2 breaks that barrier and gives us cameras that are on par with the successor to the OnePlus 12, also expected to launch in 2025.
All in all, there’s a lot of big developments for foldables in 2025. We’ll just have to add it to our list of things to wait for, alongside GTA 6 of course. For now, you can also check out the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6, the only foldable with a dust resistance certification right now, among other improvements.
