OnePlus 13 may be better at wireless charging, thanks to Qi2

Will it support fast charging?

OnePlus 13 may be better at wireless charging, thanks to Qi2

The next OnePlus flagship phone is just around the corner, and while we are expecting a powerful device when it comes to the specifications, the phone, likely to be called the OnePlus 13, may also feature some unique new features, including support for Qi2 wireless charging.

This may allow the phone to pack magnetic wireless charging similar to that of Apple’s MagSafe charging tech, which uses magnetic alignment to get a secure fit when you tether the phone to a wireless charger, or a MagSafe accessory to the phone. Here’s all we know so far.

OnePlus 13 may get Qi2 wireless charging

According to a report by Business Standard, OnePlus China president Louis Lee confirmed in a post on the Chinese social media platform Weibo that the OnePlus 13 will feature a “magnetic function” for wireless charging thereby suggesting Qi2 charging support.

OnePlus was previously using its proprietary AirVOOC technology (lightning-fast charging) to support 50W wireless charging on select flagship models like the OnePlus 12. It is important to note that the Qi2-certified devices allow up to 15W wireless charging with compatible chargers.

So, if OnePlus decides to incorporate Qi2 support in their upcoming launch, it is likely that the charging speeds may be reduced as compared to their other models. That is unless, OnePlus manages to use the magnetic aspect of Qi2 with its own faster charging systems.

It is also possible that OnePlus opts for dual support which can enable Qi2 magnetic charging for compatible chargers and a proprietary system for others. This would mean that Qi2 would be incorporated to have wider compatibility with ultra-fast wireless charging through its AirVOOC charger.

The Qi2 standard also brings several advantages. It provides improved alignment with chargers, backward compatibility with older generation Qi chargers, and support for various dedicated accessories such as stands and wallets that use magnetic coils to attach to smartphones.

The OnePlus 13 is expected to launch in China this month with a myriad of features. We will find out more when the smartphone has an official launch and the features are revealed. Until then, stay tuned to Unboxed by Croma for all things tech.
