OnePlus 12 vs OnePlus 11: What’s different this time around?

Here’s how two devices from the house of OnePlus stack up against each other

OnePlus 12 vs OnePlus 11: What’s different this time around?

OnePlus just unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 12 at a launch event in China yesterday. In the weeks leading up to the launch, and now, after the launch as well, tech forums and social media handles have been abuzz with the question of whether the device is a worthy upgrade over the OnePlus 11 or not. Well. To help you with precisely that, we’ve put together this little comparison between the two. Read on.

OnePlus 12 vs OnePlus 11: Processor, RAM and storage

The new OnePlus 12 is powered by Qualcomm’s latest flagship chipset for smartphones – the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and an Adreno 750 GPU. The device can be had in four storage variants – one with 12GB of RAM and 256GB storage, two variants with 16GB of RAM and either 512GB or 1TB of storage, and a top-of-the-line 24GB RAM variant, with 1TB of storage.

The OnePlus 11 on the other hand, is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, and an Adreno 740 GPU. It can be had in two variants – one with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, or one with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

OnePlus 12 vs OnePlus 11: Battery

The new OnePlus 12 features a large 5,400mAh battery under the hood, with support for 100W wired SuperVOOC charging, and 50W AirVOOC wireless charging.

The OnePlus 11 on the other hand, features a slightly smaller 5,000mAh battery. While it did ship with support for 100W wired SuperVOOC charging, the device lacks wireless charging capabilities, which strangely, even the older OnePlus 10T had.

OnePlus 12 vs OnePlus 11: Display and audio

The OnePlus 12 features a 6.82-inch LTPO OLED display with a 2K resolution and an adaptive refresh rate of between 1 and 120Hz. The display has a peak brightness of 4,500 nits, which is higher than rivals including the iPhone 15 series and the Samsung Galaxy S23 series. It also comes with support for Dolby Vision, 10-bit colour depth, and ProXDR.

The OnePlus 11 on the other hand, has a slightly smaller 6.7-inch display which is also an OLED LTPO unit with a 2K resolution and up to 120Hz refresh rate. The unit also features support for Dolby Vision. Moreover, it also features a 10-bit colour depth There is one crucial difference, however. The OnePlus 11’s peak brightness tops out at 1,300 nits, meaning the device’s successor offers a significant upgrade, in that respect.

On the audio front however, both devices are largely the same, and feature a dual stereo-speaker setup with support for Dolby Atmos.

OnePlus 12 vs OnePlus 11: Design

Based on a cursory glance, both the OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 11 largely look the same, with both of them being housed in a metal frame, with a large, offset, camera island at the back. There are two small differences you or may not have missed, however.

The first is the fact that the volume rockers and power button are on the right side on the OnePlus 12, whereas the iconic alert slider is on the left. In contrast, the OnePlus 11’s volume rockers were on the left side, and the power button and alert slider, were on the right.

The second difference is the fact that the OnePlus 12 features a centrally placed punch-hole cutout for the front camera, as compared to its predecessor’s offset punch-hole camera cutout.

The OnePlus 12 also features an IR blaster on the top, a feature which was missing on the OnePlus 11, but was, rather strangely, available on the cheaper OnePlus 11R.

OnePlus 12 vs OnePlus 11: Camera

OnePlus’ latest flagship, the OnePlus 12 features a triple-camera setup on the rear, with a 50MP Sony LYT-808 primary shooter, a 48MP Sony IMX581 ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 64MP Sony OV64B 3x periscope telephoto lens. On the front, you get a 32MP Sony IMX615 camera for selfies.

The OnePlus 11 on the other hand, gets a 50MP Sony IMX890 primary camera, a 48MP Sony IMX581 ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 32MP Sony IMX709 telephoto camera with support for 2x optical zoom. On the front is a 16MP camera for selfies and video calls.

Is the OnePlus 12 worth the upgrade?

OnePlus’ latest flagship smartphone offers several significant upgrades over its predecessor- whether it is in terms of the processor, RAM and storage capacity, battery, display, or in terms of features such as wireless charging support and the inclusion of an IR blaster as well. Add to it the fact that the OnePlus 12 has specs that can give devices like Samsung’s S23 series and the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, and the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max a run for their money, also means that one should certainly consider upgrading to the device.

Note that the OnePlus 12 is yet to be launched in the global market, including in countries like India. This means unlike you’re willing to wait for the brand’s new flagship, you can only get your hands on the OnePlus 11 right now. However, if the additional features and capabilities of the OnePlus 12 do appeal to you, you should definitely consider waiting for the phone.
