OnePlus 12 may feature the same cameras as the OnePlus Open

If your reason to pick the OnePlus 12 over the Open is camera performance, you may want to think again

OnePlus 12 may feature the same cameras as the OnePlus Open

The OnePlus Open launched earlier this year, and experts have called it one of the best foldables to have launched in recent times. The phone sports a nice hinge, great specifications, a flat-folding design, and is the closest we have come to a no-crease folding display.

However, that may not have been enough for OnePlus fans who want the best performance for the buck. That would be the OnePlus 12, which is set to release later this year. While it may not sport a folding inner display, the OnePlus 12 is expected to excel over the OnePlus Open in other areas like performance and fast charging. However, one of the aspects the OnePlus 12 may not beat the brand’s own foldable in, is the camera.

OnePlus 12 may not have new camera sensors

As per a GSMArena report, a new leaked image on micro-blogging platform Weibo has detailed the camera specifications of the OnePlus 12. Per the leak, the camera setup comprises a 50MP main Sony LYT-808 sensor, a 48MP ultrawide sensor and a 64MP 3X telephoto sensor. All of these, with the Hasselblad branding.

If those numbers sound familiar, it is because OnePlus Open also featured pretty much the same camera setup, down to the Sony LYT-808 main camera sensor. This suggests the OnePlus 12 may not beat the OnePlus Open in camera performance, at least by hardware alone.

OnePlus 12 may still have some tricks up its sleeve

Of course, the camera performance of any smartphone, let alone a flagship, is not dictated by hardware alone. While the OnePlus 12 may have the same camera sensors, the brand may always throw in some software features exclusive to the OnePlus 12. Some of these features may also leverage the generative AI capabilities of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip the phone is expected to pack.

The OnePlus 12 is also more than just its camera setup. The phone is expected to offer the performance of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 along with a new more durable AMOLED display panel. The phone will also likely feature wireless charging, something the OnePlus Open simply lacks, and will also likely be certified against both water and dust ingress, unlike the foldable.

So yes, despite not packing newer numbers on the camera, you may still want to wait for the OnePlus 12 to launch before splurging on your next flagship. Note that all the above information is based off leaks and rumours, and has not been officially confirmed by OnePlus. The OnePlus 12 is set to launch in December in China, and could come to the global market as soon as early 2024, and we should be hearing more official details around the phone closer to its launch.
