Samsung Galaxy S22 to Flip4: These older phones too are getting the Galaxy AI update

It’s been a while since Samsung unveiled its latest flagship smartphones – the Galaxy S24 series. While there has been much hype around them, what’s been talked about even more are the Galaxy AI features on board.

Users of many older Samsung flagships however have been left wondering when Galaxy AI will make its way to their devices, if at all.

Good news. After having released it for devices such as the Galaxy S23 series (including the Galaxy S23 FE), Galaxy Z Fold5 and Galaxy Flip5, and the Galaxy Tab S9 series, Samsung is going to be rolling out Galaxy AI for yet another set of its devices in May.

Which Samsung devices are getting Galaxy AI in May?

Following the Galaxy S24 and S23 series, Samsung has just confirmed that it will be rolling out Galaxy AI to its erstwhile flagships – the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra, as well as the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra.

Additionally, older devices from the Galaxy Z Fold and Flip series, including the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Flip4, and the Samsung Galaxy Fold3 and Galaxy Flip3 too are also eligible for the update.

That’s not all. Samsung is also extending the Galaxy AI feature to its older series of flagship tablets, the Galaxy Tab S8 series.

Now, bear in mind. As per a community note, the Galaxy S22 series, the Galaxy Fold4 and Galaxy Flip4, and the Galaxy Tab S8 series will get all of the features of Galaxy AI that the Galaxy S23 FE gets but will miss out on the instant slo-mo feature the way the latter does too.

Additionally, the older Galaxy S21 series and the Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Flip3 will be receiving only two features – Chat Assist and Circle to Search, presumably owing to hardware restrictions.

How to download and install the Galaxy AI update on your device

If your Samsung Galaxy smartphone or tablet is on this list, all you have to do is look out for the Android 14-based One UI 6.1 update on your device.

To check for and install the same, do the following:

1. Head to the Settings app on your phone

2. Find an option that says, ‘Software updates’ or ‘System updates’ and tap on it.

3. On the subsequent screen, tap on ‘Check for updates’.

4. Should the update be available, it should pop up. And underneath, there should be an option that says, ‘Download and install’. Tap on it, and it should begin to download.

5. Once the download is complete, tap on the notification for the same, and follow the on-screen instructions to install it to your device.

It is important to note here you will need a Samsung Account and an active internet connection to use these features at any time. Secondly, Galaxy AI will be free of cost only until 2025, post which Samsung may put some or all of the features behind a paywall.

For those whose devices didn’t make the cut, fret not. You can try out Galaxy AI on any smartphone, using Samsung’s Try Galaxy app.
