Nvidia launches Hindi-Language AI model in India: Here’s what it can do

One of the world’s largest chip makers, Nvidia, has launched a new small language model in India to foster local AI model generation. Interestingly, this model isn’t available in English or any other global language, but in Hindi, as it’s a widely spoken language in the country.

Nvidia believes that firms can use this language model to build their own AI models for the locals. This move of the chip maker could be a key step in growing the AI landscape in India. Read on to learn more about Nvidia’s latest language model.

The official page of the AI model reveals that users can chat with it in Hindi as well as in English. This is a piece of great news for those who haven’t really tried using AI models yet due to the language barrier.

For instance, users can ask for facts about India or question about the country’s agricultural advancements, all in Hindi to Nemotron-4-Mini-Hindi-4B. However, this is just a sample of what the small language model can do. With this, Nvidia expects firms to use this model in their apps and services.

The Nvidia page shows all the parameters of the model as well as its code and API Key for firms for reference. Tech Mahindra, an Indian IT and consulting firm, is the first to use this language model to develop a custom AI model dubbed Indus 2.0 Indus 2.0 will not only focus on Hindi as its default language but will also have other dialects for user convenience.

The chip maker said that a tenth of the population of 1.4 billion use English for conversations, whereas, the rest of the people rely on local languages, including Hindi, among others. With the Nemotron-4-Mini-Hindi-4B model, many Indias are expected to try an AI tool like this for the first time in their convenient language.

However, we’ll have to wait and see how this Hindi language model materialises in apps made by Indian firms. Until then, you as a consumer can rely on many of the available AI apps that allow you to converse in languages other than English, like ChatGPT and Google Gemini. Both allow you to chat in Hindi, Marathi, and Tamil, among other languages.
