WhatsApp has been on a roll lately. The latest addition to an already extensive feature list, is the ability to create groups without naming them. Parent company Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the feature via a Facebook post on Wednesday. Read on to find out just what the feature can do for you, and what its limitations are.
Why you should pay attention to this feature
WhatsApp now allows users to create groups without having to think of a name or a subject while creating the same. This is especially useful in cases where a group needs to be created quickly or for temporary purposes.
Now, one may imagine that it might be difficult to find and keep track of the conversation on their smartphones since these groups will remain unnamed. However, that’s not the case. A cool thing about WhatsApp’s latest feature is that it will auto-generate group names based on how you’ve saved the names of the contacts added to the group.

Owing to the fact that everyone may have saved a given person’s number by different names, the group name subsequently generated is also different for each user, allowing them to find the conversation faster on their own devices.
However, if one were to create a group with participants whose names they haven’t saved, then only the participants’ phone numbers will show up where their names usually do. This suggests that the feature is tailored only for those groups wherein participants know each other.
The only limitation to the feature though, is the fact that such groups only allow up to six participants at a time – compared to the usual limit of 1,024 participants.
For now, a report from TechCrunch only says that the feature will be rolled out globally in the next few weeks. Whether the feature will first be made available on Android or iOS devices, or when, remains unknown as of yet.
Other new WhatsApp features to watch out for
WhatsApp recently introduced several new features to the platform. These include the ability to edit media captions on its app, share HD photos, generate stickers using AI, as well screen sharing and landscape mode support for video calls. With these features, WhatsApp is looking to establish its dominance in the instant messaging space, as well as take on more mainstream meeting platforms including Microsoft Teams, Google Meet and Zoom.
