Nothing Phone (2a) is the company’s latest midrange smartphone: Here are five features to look out for

After doing rounds in the rumour mills for months, Carl Pei-led Nothing has (finally!) taken the wraps off of its Nothing Phone (2a), its next mid-range smartphone.

The device is the third offering from the company and has been long awaited, for it is the company’s third smartphone, and presents a cheaper alternative for those looking to upgrade from the Nothing Phone (1), but may not want to spend as much as the Nothing Phone (2) may require them to.

Bear in mind though, Nothing hasn’t made any compromises with the phone in any manner, and it can give several much higher-end phones a run for their money. Here’s a list of the five most exciting features to look out for on the Nothing Phone (2a).

1. Redesigned back

The Nothing Phone (2a) sports a redesigned back, which is a departure from Nothing’s older devices. It gets smaller signature glyph lights this time around, and the cameras are laid out in a horizontal orientation this time around, compared to the vertical layout on the Nothing Phone (1) and (2).

Speaking of cameras, the Nothing Phone (2a) sports a dual camera setup at the rear, with a 50MP primary sensor and a 50MP ultra-wide-angle sensor. On the front, is a 32MP camera housed in a punch-hole cutout for selfies and video calls.

The white variant of the phone also gets contrasting black power buttons and volume rockers, adding to the phone’s appeal all the more.

Oh and, in case we forgot to mention it – the phone (2a) gets an IP54 water and dust resistance rating.

2. MediaTek Dimesity 7200 Pro chipset

The Nothing Phone (2a) comes running on the MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro chipset, with 12GB RAM and up to 256GB storage. The chipset is up to 18 per cent faster and 16 per cent more efficient than the Snapdragon 778G chipset on the Nothing Phone (1), and has a peak clock speed of 2.8Ghz, coupled with an Arm Mali G610 MC4 GPU. The phone should be able to handle most everyday multi-tasking and some light gaming with ease.

The Nothing Phone (2a) is available in three variants  – two with 8GB RAM and either 128GB or 256GB storage, and one with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage.

3. Nothing OS 2.5

The Nothing Phone (2a) comes running on Android 14-based Nothing OS 2.5 straight out of the box. The operating system allows for several customization options, including a new customisation page for the home and lock screen, a new Atmosphere wallpaper effect, and also a monochrome colour theme.

Other nifty features on Nothing OS 2.5 include double-tapping the power button to quickly access a pre-set application, a pedometer widget, a media player, and screen time widget, and more.

What’s more, the Nothing Phone (2a) will also get a guaranteed three years of software, and four years of security updates.

4. Display

The Nothing Phone (2a) gets a 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz, compared to the 90Hz display on the Nothing Phone (1).

It also has a peak brightness of 1,300 nits. What’s cool is, that the display also gets an HDR10+ certification, and will therefore definitely provide for a crisp and immersive viewing experience.

5. Battery

The Nothing Phone (2a) packs a 5,000mAh battery, which is bigger than the Nothing Phone (1)’s 4,500mAh unit. This, coupled with fast charging support means the phone should easily last users for a whole day on a full charge, without breaking a sweat.

Nothing Phone (2a) pricing and availability

The Nothing Phone (2a) is available in two colours – black and white. It is priced starting at Rs 23,999, for the 8GB RAM/128GB storage variant. A few other options you can consider in the price range are the Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G, and the OnePlus Nord 3.
