The Nothing Ear (Open) wasn’t the only announcement Carl Pei-led Nothing had in store for its fans. Alongside the new open-ear design wearable stereo device, Nothing also announced its next operating system – Nothing OS 3.0. Here’s everything you need to know.
Nothing OS 3.0: What’s new?
It’s been a few months since we got our first look at Nothing OS 3.0, when the company’s founder and CEO “leaked” a first look at the operating system in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
While that post didn’t have any details, now the closed beta program for Nothing OS 3.0 has kicked off. Unsurprisingly, the latest OS version beings with it a host of new features.

First off, Nothing OS 3.0 gets a new matrix animation engine for Nothing smartphones‘ instantly recognisable N-dot font. The font now gets smoother and more dynamic visual effects throughout the UI, such as when the device is unlocked via the fingerprint scanner, or when it is put to charge. What’s cool is the weather app, which shows icons denoting the weather in the dot matrix style, with animations.
On the lock screen, one can now switch between clock styles, or remove it completely to add widgets instead. Oh, and speaking of widgets, there’s a new widget-sharing feature as well. In essence, you can now link widgets on your friends’ and families’ devices.
The quick settings menu also sees an overhaul, wherein the toggles can be resized similar to iOS 18. The auto-brightness toggle is now integrated into the brightness control slider as well.
The app drawer allows you to pin frequently used apps to the top, should you choose to do so. If, however, you prefer a cleaner, more organised look, you may want to take a look at the new Smart Drawer.
The Smart Drawer can automatically arrange different apps of yours into categories such as productivity, entertainment, utilities, and more. This is one of several AI-powered features that Nothing OS 3.0 gets.

The gallery app gets a processing time up to 25 per cent faster than earlier, and the ability to identify key objects and segment them out of the other parts of images. On offer is also automatic AI image categorisation capabilities, AI upscaling on images, and super-resolution as well. An AI image generation feature is also in the works for Nothing devices, which will work on lines similar to Pixel Studio.
Nothing OS 3.0: When will your Nothing Phone get the update?
The Open Beta version of Nothing OS 3.0 will start rolling out next month, whereas the stable version is slated for release in December. Carl Pei in his livestream however, did not mention an exact date or a list of compatible devices for the update.
