The iPad 10 was the first generation of Apple’s tablet lineup to feature a landscape camera on the front. Now, a MacRumors report suggests that future models could adopt a similar design as well.
What’s more, this camera could also be used for Face ID on the iPad Pro models, which are currently the only ones in the lineup to get the feature. Code in iOS 17.4 Beta reportedly suggests that users will need to keep their iPads in a landscape orientation with the cameras on top to set up Face ID. However, it also suggests that the feature, once set up, will work in both landscape and portrait modes.
If this is true, the move could prove to be quite a handy one, since large devices such as the iPad are typically held and used in landscape orientation. Many other brands, including the likes of Samsung and OnePlus, have already begun to the landscape-oriented placements for the camera on their tablets. Moreover, the fact that Apple via software updates, is also positioning the iPad Pro as an alternative to a MacBook, also makes relocating the camera a sensible move.
What to expect from Apple’s next-generation iPads?
Apple is expected to debut its new iPad Air and iPad Pro models very soon. Reports suggest that it could be as soon as April this year.
The iPad Air is expected to be launched in two sizes – 10.9 and 12.9 inches, sporting an M2 chip, a redesigned camera module, as well as Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 6E connectivity.

The new iPad Pro, on the other hand, is expected to be Apple’s first tablet with the updated M3 chip, and an OLED display. In addition to offering brightness as well as crisp colours and contrast, the ProMotion technology onboard is also expected to allow for a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz on the device.
Either way, we cannot wait to see what Apple has in store for us with their next iPad.
