Next-gen Apple AirTags could come with better tracking power and more

Apple AirTags are almost three years old and are especially handy for locating your wallets or keys. The item tracker comes with Bluetooth connectivity that can conveniently locate your small or big items for you. AirTags make a great addition to your collection of travel accessories but were probably due for an update.

Almost on cue, the AirTags could soon see a change as rumours point to a second-generation AirTag. The updated accessory may bring better chip tracking, seamless connectivity with the Apple Vision Pro, and could roll out as soon as next year. Here’s everything we know so far.

Apple AirTags second generation: Expected features to look out for

As per a Bloomberg report, the new AirTag could be internally known by the codename B589. The updated version could flaunt a better chipset and also improve location tracking.

The report also mentions how AirTag 2 could have a second-generation Ultra-Wideband (UWB) chipset, which is similar to Apple’s iPhone 15 series and Apple Watch 9 series. This could help improve the current range, which, as of today, is limited to 10 meters at best. However, with an advanced conductor, it may be able to detect items as far as 60 meters in distance, paving the way for the Precision Finding feature.

The report also suggests how the new AirTag could come in a different shape or size; however, there’s no saying whether Apple may end up changing it too drastically. While the report, also expressed a desire to see better speakers or battery life on the new AirTag, as of today, we might have to wait a little longer for additional details.

Apple AirTag 2: When will it be available for purchase?

Only last year, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned how next-gen AirTags could hit the stores sometime in 2025. This new Bloomberg report also confirms this claim as the item locator is currently being tested with Apple’s manufacturing partners in Asia.

It further states how it could be fully compatible with the Apple Vision Pro. That said, there’s no saying how the item will be priced, and tech enthusiasts might have to wait for an updated price range.
