In an attempt to keep the platform more secure, meta-owned WhatsApp has introduced a crucial security feature for the privacy minded. The instant messaging app, in its recent blog post, mentions how users can now mask their IP addresses while making a WhatsApp call. The setting will be a toggle button switch that will let the caller shield their IP address while placing their call.
How does this feature work?
While placing a WhatsApp call, users will have an option to switch on the feature that hides their IP address. These calls will further be relayed via WhatsApp and Meta servers, which in return conceal these addresses.

This means users opting for this feature will no longer be relaying their calls using a P2P (peer-to-peer) connection. Shielding your IP address ensures participants of the call cannot tell of your geographical location. The blog goes on to mention how the calls will still be end-to-end encrypted, but the addition of the new feature could end up reducing the call quality.
How to switch on this feature for yourself
With simple steps, you can turn on this feature for yourself. However, before you do, ensure your WhatsApp version is updated to the latest one. Here is how to enable this feature on your smartphone.
Step 1: Head over to the settings menu on WhatsApp
Step 2: Tap on Privacy and locate the Advanced option on
Step 3: After selecting it, you will find the Protect IP Address on the Call option; activate it, and you’re good to go!
WhatsApp additionally mentions its option to Silence Unknown Callers, which was first announced by the platform in June. This feature was primarily introduced to reduce spam calls and prevent the possibility of a cyber security attack.
To enable this, you can simply go to the Settings menu, visit Privacy and tap on the Calls options. On expanding, the menu will show the toggle button to silence unknown callers. However, it is important to note that the calls will still be shown to you in the Calls tab and in your notifications bar.
