Netflix updates profile transfer feature, now allows transfers to existing accounts

Netflix has revamped its profile transfer feature, which now allows users to transfer their profiles to existing accounts, a provision previously limited to new accounts.

The feature essentially allows users to easily port their profile settings, watch history, as well as personalised recommendations amongst other things, rather than having to go through the hassle of creating a new account and setting it all up again.

Netflix first introduced the feature back in October 2022 to encourage members to create new accounts. It is part of its wider ongoing efforts against password-sharing practices.

How to transfer your Netflix profile to an existing account

Here are five simple steps to transfer your profile to an existing account on Netflix.

1. Open the Netflix app on your smartphone/laptop/TV.

2. Click on the profile icon on the top-right corner and select ‘profile transfer’.

3. Here, choose ‘An existing account’ to transfer your profile to.

4. Enter the email address and password of the account you wish to transfer your profile to.

5. Look for a notification sent via email, to the owner of the account of your choosing, informing them that a profile has been transferred to their account.

And that’s it. You’re all set to use your profile on the new account.

When is a user eligible to transfer their profile?

Netflix user profiles can be transferred only under the following circumstances:

1. The user account to which the profile is to be transferred is active.

2. The user profile must not be registered as a kid’s profile.

3. The device on which the account is to be transferred is not pin protected.

4. The account does not have an email address associated with its profile.

Furthermore, if a user doesn’t live in the same household, but still wants to transfer their profile to the same account, they will be added as an extra member and charged a fee for the same on a monthly basis.
