Netflix recently announced that the streaming platform will no longer be available on older Apple TV devices. As a result, affected older models will soon no longer be able to run the Netflix app.
Now this may not concern you, if you only binge on Netflix on your smartphones, but if you’re someone who has an older Apple TV, here’s everything you need to know about the new change.
Which Apple TV generations are affected?
The move will affect second generation and third generation Apple TV models, which were launched in 2010 and 2012, respectively. Not supporting the decade-old devices allows Netflix to focus its resources to bring newer features to newer Apple TV models like the Apple TV 4K, or other set top boxes.

Apple also considers these older variants ‘obsolete’, and as a result, these older versions of Apple TV also no longer support tvOS 17, the latest software for Apple TVs that was launched at WWDC last year.
When will Netflix stop working on these devices
The change will be implemented on July 31st, which would give any Apple TV gen 2 and gen 3 users a little under two months to upgrade to one of the newer Apple TV models, if they want to continue watching Netflix, that is!
This isn’t the first time Netflix has ditched native support for older Apple TV models. Back in 2019, the popular streaming app also stopped supporting a number of TVs from Samsung and other brands. This was also when Netflix had made the switch from Windows Media DRM to Microsoft’s PlayReady DRM.
In other news, Netflix also recently announced that it will be removing its ‘Downloads’ feature for Windows devices, which means those using Netflix on their laptops and desktops may soon no longer be able to offline movies and watch them later without an internet connection.
