MWC 2024: What to expect at the expo this year

Mobile World Congress is one of the biggest tech expos of the year, and MWC 2024 is expected to be full of new launches, interesting concepts and more. While the event has been a showcase for products across categories in previous years, new smartphones are a highlight almost every year.

With MWC 2024 kicking off in just a few days, here’s all that you need to watch out for at the event, including phones, laptops and more.

Nothing Phone (2a)

Starting off with a piece of consumer technology most of us use on a daily basis, quite a few brands are expected to launch new phones at MWC 2024. This includes Nothing, which is set to showcase what could be its next phone – the Nothing Phone (2a).

While the brand has a full launch event set just days later on March 5, don’t be surprised to see a quick peak at the brand’s newest take on the mid-range segment with the Phone (2a). This may also be coupled with new audio products that the brand has been teasing.

OnePlus Watch 2

OnePlus has already stocked its shelves with the OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R in many regions, including India. But the brand is not done for the year just yet. Recent teasers have revealed that the company is now after a market it hasn’t dived in for a while – smartwatches.

While the original OnePlus Watch wasn’t the biggest hit because of its proprietary OS, something rivals were offering at a much smaller price, rumours have suggested the OnePlus Watch 2 will be a WearOS powered device. The wearable is also expected to feature elements like a round, AMOLED display, a Snapdragon chip and a couple of hardware buttons. More details could be revealed at the event.

Xiaomi 14 series

The Xiaomi 14, Xiaomi 14 Pro and the recently launched Xiaomi 14 Ultra have all been announced in China already. That said, MWC 2024 could be the perfect stage for the brand to showcase its newest flagship phones to the world before a global launch for the series.

Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, all three phones are packed with powerful hardware to go, but it is the Xiaomi 14 Ultra that stands out with features like a 1-inch camera sensor, support for 80W wireless charging and a special titanium variant that comes with satellite communication support.

Lenovo’s transparent laptop

If you’ve been following brands like Nothing and events like CES 2024, it should not come as a surprise to you that many brands have been setting their sights on transparent consumer technology. After transparent TVs, Lenovo is likely to showcase what could be a transparent laptop.

As per leaks by X tipster Evan Blass (@evleaks), Lenovo is prepping to showcase a concept laptop at MWC 2024. This laptop will be a dual-display gadget like the Asus ZenBook Fold, except at least one half of the device is expected to be a transparent panel, leaving us wondering just where Lenovo plans to cram all the other components. Well, thankfully there isn’t much of a wait before we find out.

Other expected announcements

Mentioned above are just some of the brands that are expected to steal the spotlight at MWC with a shiny new product. However, the event will also see the presence of many other brands including Samsung or Nokia (now HMD Global) which will likely have new products or services on display.

Some of the best brands to watch out for at MWC each year are also the newer players in the market that we probably haven’t heard of. Every year there’s a bunch of phones and other tech coming from the new kid on the block, from the quirky to the futuristic.
