How to use Microsoft’s Energy Saver mode on Windows 11

Ever been in this situation – you’re traveling on a flight, wrapping up some last-minute emails and spreadsheets, and your laptop decides to run on juice. With no power point in sight, what do you do? You enable the battery-saving mode, of course.

Well, Microsoft has something new in store for us. While it may not sound like a new feature per se, the company has been testing what it calls an enhanced version of the battery-saving mode, called the Energy Saver.

What's Energy Saving mode on Windows 11?

The new Energy Saver mode on Windows 11 will not just help save your device’s battery in between charges, but also extend its battery life. Microsoft says that this mode restricts a few functions and trades off some performance for battery life.

However, the one fundamental difference between battery-saving mode and Energy Saver, is that the latter can be used even when your device is plugged in, meaning it can be used with desktops as well. This helps one to not just prolong their devices’ battery life, but also save on electricity bills as well.

How to enable Energy Saver on Windows 11

It is important to remember that this mode is currently only available for developers on the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26002 (Canary Channel). Having said that, if you happen to one of them, here’s how to access and enable it.

1. Hit the Start button on the bottom left corner of your screen.

2. Head to the Settings app.

3. Tap on the “System” option, and head to “Power and battery” settings.

4. Here, you will find the “Energy Saver” mode. Turn the toggle on to use the same when your device’s battery starts draining.

Along with the Energy Saver, Microsoft is also working on improving its quick settings menu in the system tray, as well as in the VPN and Wi-Fi networks menus.
