Microsoft unveils next-gen Surface laptops: Everything you need to know

Microsoft at its Surface event yesterday unveiled three new laptops — the Surface Laptop Studio 2, the Surface Go 3 and the Surface Go 4.

Here’s all you need to know about Microsoft’s newest offerings for those looking for a Windows system, with a slim and lightweight design, without having to compromise on computing power.

Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2

The Surface Studio 2 can be used in various modes depending on a user’s preferences. The first is the traditional laptop mode. Then there is stage mode, wherein the screen can be pulled and the device can be used as a tablet with a touchpad. The third is tablet mode, allowing for one to use the device on the go.

Under the hood, the Surface Studio 2 is powered by an Intel Core i7-13800H Raptor Lake processor. A lower-end i5 variant is also available. The device is available in three configurations, a 16GB, 32GB, and a 64GB RAM variant. Keeping storage in mind, the laptop can comes equipped with 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB SSDs. For graphics, there is an Intel Iris Xe graphics card on the i5 variant, and a 6GB Nvidia RTX 4050 GPU, or 8GB RTX 4060 GPU on the i7 variants.

It features a 14.4-inch display with a resolution of 2,400×1,600 pixels, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 650 nits. On the audio front, it features a quad Omnisonic speaker with support for Dolby Atmos.

The device features a 58Wh hour battery, which offers up to 19 hours of usage on the i5 variant.

Surface Laptop Go 3

Aimed at users on a budget, the Microsoft Surface Go 3 laptop is powered by a 12th Gen Intel Core i5-1235U processor and features Intel Iris Xe graphics.

It can be had with either 8 or 16GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage. Its 12.4-inch PixelSense display has a resolution of 1536×1024 pixels, a 3:2 aspect ratio and a maximum brightness of 320 nits. Audio is taken care of by an Omnisonic speaker design with support for Dolby Audio Premium.

On the battery front, the Surface Go 3 features a 40Wh battery, which Microsoft claims, offers for up to 15 hours of usage on a single charge.

Speaking of connectivity, the device features a USB Type-C 3.2 port, along with a USB-A 3.1 port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and the Surface Connect port.

Surface Go 4

The Microsoft Surface Go 4 is again a 2-in-1 laptop, which can be converted either into a laptop or a tablet on the go, depending on a user’s requirements. It is powered by an Intel N200 processor with Intel UHD graphics.

The device is available in a single 8GB RAM variant, with either 64, 128, or 256GB of storage. The 10.5-inch display has a resolution of 1920×1280 pixels. It also features an 8MP Full HD camera on the rear, as well as a 1080P Full HD front camera. On the audio front, the device features 2W stereo speakers with support for Dolby Audio Premium.

Microsoft claims it can last for up to 12.5 hours with typical usage on a full charge.

For connectivity, the Surface Go 4 features a USB-C 3.1 port, a MicroSD card reader, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a Surface type cover port, and a Surface connect port.

Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2, Laptop Go 3, Go 4 Pricing and availability

The Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2 starts at $1,999 (approximately Rs 1,66,000) in the US, for the base variant with i5 13th Gen processor and Intel Xe graphics. Prices are expected to be much higher for the higher-end Core i7 variants with the RTX 4050 and RTX 4060 GPUs.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 3 starts at $799 (approximately Rs 66,200) in the US, for the i5-variant with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. It is available in sage, ice blue, sandstone, and platinum colors.

The Surface Go 4 starts at $579 (approximately Rs 48,100) in the US, for the base 64GB storage model.

All the aforementioned devices are now available for pre-order in the US and are expected to start shipping in October. However, launch dates and pricing for other international markets, including India, remain unknown as of yet.
