Mark Zuckerberg announced at the Meta Connect 2024 developer conference held at Menlo Park that Meta AI can now answer questions aloud. This feature will be available across several platforms like Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Facebook.
Just like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, Meta AI is an AI assistant that answers questions, creates images, writes messages, and can even be your companion. Meta AI users will also be able to choose from various voices.
AI assistants to be voiced by Hollywood actors
When OpenAI had previewed a similar feature on ChatGPT, it led to a controversy. Since the feature sounded almost like Scarlett Johansson from the movie ‘Her’, the actress’ legal team got involved and Microsoft had to discontinue the feature from ChatGPT.
Learning from the experience, Meta obtained permission from the artists before launching their new voice tool. Users can get information from AI versions of Dame Judi Dench, John Cena, Awkwafina, Keegan Michael Key, and Kristen Bell.

Meta believes their AI assistants sound more natural, can interact verbally, and helps the users to analyse images. It can also suggest recipes or edit images based on simple user requests.
Meta AI will be accessible globally on all devices like smartphone and laptops, except in Europe based on concerns about compliance with EU data protection laws and potential fines. As of now, it is still unclear when these features will be made available for users.
Meta AI: Other features
Apart from the voice chat, Meta AI has announced other features including image analysis and editing features. The new Reimagine AI tool allows you to create AI-generated images. It includes photos from your feed, stories, and Meta apps.
Another feature called ‘On Offer’ automatically translates reels. It can automatically dub and lip-sync a creator’s voice if it is in a language they don’t understand. This feature is currently being tested in Latin America, US English, and Spanish. It will be rolled out to other creators soon.
The users are eagerly waiting to try out these new features as soon as they go live. For more tech-related news, subscribe to Unboxed by Croma.
