MediaTek Dimensity 8250 chipset launched

MediaTek’s latest 5G chip is here

MediaTek Dimensity 8250 chipset launched

It’s been a busy few weeks for MediaTek. After having launched its flagship Dimensity 9300+ chipset with improved on-device generative AI capabilities, the company has launched a new mid-range smartphone chipset as well. Namely, the Dimensity 8250. Read on to know more.

The 4nm MediaTek Dimensity 8250 SoC packs on-device AI capabilities, the same as its more premium sibling, as well as its closest rival, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3, unveiled in March.

MediaTek Dimensity 8250: What's inside?

The Dimensity 8250 packs four Arm Cortex A-78 cores and four Cortex A-55 cores, with the main octa-core A78 core clocked at a peak speed of 3.1 GHz. The other three A-78 cores are clocked at 3.0 GHz, whereas the A55 cores get a peak clock speed of 2.0 GHz. Coupled with this, is an Arm Mali-G610 MC6 GPU.

It is a (slightly) lesser powerful version of the MediaTek Dimensity 8300, which was also developed for upper mid-range devices, and launched in November last year.

MediaTek Dimensity 8250: Features

Coming to hardware support, the chipset supports quad-channel LPDDR5 RAM of up to 6,400Mbps and UFS 3.1 storage. Besides this, it also gets support for up to a 120Hz WQHD+ resolution display, or even a 180Hz Full HD+ display, as well as HDR10+ video processing.

On the connectivity front is a fully integrated 5G modem support along with Wi-Fi 6E support and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity. Peaking download link speed stands at about 4.7Gbps.

For optics, there is support for primary camera sensors of up to 320MP, and a triple camera setup overall. Video recording support is for up to a 4k resolution at 60fps and 1080P resolution at 60fps. The on-board AI support also helps reduce image distortion and provides for up to 2x lossless zoom.

MediaTek Dimensity 8250: On-board AI capabilities

This brings us to the most important bit on the chipset, bearing in mind all the hype around AI these days. The MediaTek Dimensity 8250 gets a multi-core APU 580 engine on board, and MediaTek claims that the chip displays “excellent” ETHZ benchmarks. However, no scores were actually mentioned. We reckon the AI performance on the chip will not be as powerful as the Dimensity 9300+, but should be a great addition for more affordable phones nonetheless.

What the chip’s AI engine actually is capable of, remains to be seen. This shouldn’t be too far away, since rumours suggest that the first phones to get the chipset will be the Oppo Reno 12 series, slated for launch in China sometime next month.
