List of all discontinued Google products and services

A trip down memory lane with these no longer available Google products and services

List of all discontinued Google products and services

Alongside a search engine that is used by millions daily, Google also offers an array of products and services. The Mountain View-based tech giant keeps releasing new products every now and then. However, some of them have unfortunately been discontinued. It is a common practice for companies to get rid of older products and services. There are plenty of reasons for this including success of the service, shift in user preferences, newer technological developments, and more.

Google Graveyard is a dedicated website where all the discontinued products and services once offered by Google are listed. The list is long enough that it takes you a trip down memory lane. Some of them seemed significant, at least back then.

In this article, we list down memorable and some of the dearly missed products and services that Google killed or one might say digitally buried over the years.

3. VPN by Google One

4. Google+

5. Picasa

6. Google Glass

7. Google Podcast

1. Google Reader

Launched in 2005, Google Reader was discontinued in 2013. It was a popular RSS feed aggregator to keep up with all the updates from your favourite websites in one place, so that you do not miss out on anything important. It was shut down due to declining usage as per the company.

2. Google Stadia

Google Stadia, the company’s cloud gaming service sadly could not live longer. First released in 2019, it was shut down last year. Google Stadia allowed users to play games through web browsers, TV, mobile apps, and Chromecast through a wireless gaming controller. There were some issues with Stadia and the search giant could not compete against the likes of Sony and Microsoft in the gaming world.

3. VPN by Google One

VPN by Google One is set to join the Graveyard next month. It was launched in 2020 to compete against popular VPN providers as an accessible and affordable alternative. The service provided users options to mask their IP address and encrypted transit of their data and network activity.

4. Google+

Remember the early social media days when you would just sign up on every new platform? Google+ was up against Facebook (now Meta). Users could post photos, text updates, and join groups called Circles. There was also drive, photos, and hangouts integration on the social networking service. The search giant killed Google+ in 2019.

5. Picasa

Picasa was a popular app on smartphones and desktops. It let users store and manage their photos along with some editing tools. The product was available for 13 long years until Google discontinued it in 2016. The search giant now offers Google Photos.

6. Google Glass

Back then augmented reality was a hot topic of what technology would be in the future (current times).

While smart glasses are still around with only a few players in the market, Google shut down Google Glass entirely in 2023 after the consumer version met its end in 2015. Google Glass was no different compared to the few smart glasses that are available today. To the wearer, the smart spectacles offered information overlay, a camera for capturing images and video and interacting with various applications via voice commands.

7. Google Podcasts

In today’s times, podcasts have become a massively popular form of consuming content. Google also offered its own podcast hosting platform and a listening app on Android. However, the search giant discontinued the service earlier this year.

8. Google Street View

Google Street View was a standalone app available on Android and iOS devices. It offered a 360-degree view of locations around the world. The Google Street View app was killed in 2023 and some of its features were integrated into Google Maps.

9. Google Play Music

Google Play Music offered music streaming, online storage for music, and podcasts. It was quite popular during its time and did everything expected from a music streaming service. You could also purchase digital tracks. Google Play Music met its demise in 2020 in favour of YouTube Music.

Many of these products and services shut down by Google have led to something better. The legacy of discontinued products lives on. But it also highlights Google’s commitment to wind down projects that don’t work and make room for newer technologies.
