Looking for a television that’s portable? LG has you covered

The 1980s brought us the first true laptop, and the bulky computer was suddenly a portable machine you could carry around. Decades later, South Korean tech giant LG has just taken the first step towards a similar evolution, but for televisions. Exhibit A – the LG StanbyMe Go – the world’s first portable TV of its kind.

More than just a large screen, the LG StanbyMe Go is a 27-inch display that morphs into a subtle briefcase in a manner that would make Optimus Prime proud. The device is also more than just a portable monitor in a briefcase. The entire screen is a touch-enabled LED panel, with an FHD 1080p resolution and Dolby Vision support.

This lets the TV show you your favourite sports, movies, shows and much more, on picnics, road trips or on a family visit where you want to impress the in-laws. The LG StanbyMe Go sports a swivel that lets you raise the screen up wherever you want to set the television up, all without any stands, mounts or complicated DIY hassles.

Features include an HDMI input that lets you connect your laptop or a gaming console, and Apple AirPlay support. An app store also lets you download your favourite streaming apps like Disney Plus, Netflix or Prime Video, along with a few games you can enjoy in the table mode, like chess.

That’s not it. The StanbyMe Go also packs its own audio with built-in 20W speakers, complete with Dolby Atmos support. The case also does more than just double up as a stand, also providing neat compartments for holding the built-in battery and other accessories like the remote. And yes, the screen itself can be oriented in both landscape and portrait.

The price for the convenience of carrying a TV in your car’s trunk is $999 (about Rs 83,126). Unfortunately, the product hasn’t yet hit store shelves, so you can’t walk to a store to check it out just yet. Instead, LG is accepting pre-orders on its website, with shipping expected to kick off by August 28.

While availability in India remains a mystery for now, it does seem unlikely that the product will launch in the country, given that the 2021 LG StanbyMe battery-powered mounted TV also never made it here.
