Smartphone cameras, especially those on newer iPhones have come very far in mobile photography. However, you still can’t quite compare them to proper cameras when it comes to taking some good, high-resolution pictures with details and depth. The new Leica LUX app though, changes that just enough for you to warrant giving it a shot.
Available for iPhones, the Leica LUX app is a collaboration between Fjorden Electra AS and Leica, the popular German camera-maker with over a century of experience in photography. The application allows supported iPhones like the iPhone 15 Pro to take classic Leica camera style photos.
How it works
The Leica LUX app comes with 11 colour profiles, called Leica Looks that carry the aesthetic look of some current-gen Leica cameras as well as older film-based models. For those who want to take quick pictures, the app has a fully functioning auto mode, that is great for those who don’t have the patience to manually adjust every aspect of a photo.
But for those that do, the app also has an “Aperture mode”, which uses software to artificially create the effect of taking your shot with professional-grade lenses. These effects add drama to your photos, but the results can have a filtered feel to them, so we wouldn’t recommend this to be your default camera app. However, it might just be a great secondary app on your next vacation.

How to get Leica LUX on your iPhone?
Getting the app is as simple as heading to the App Store, searching for ‘Leica LUX’ and downloading. However, do remember that while you can get five Leica Looks and one lens imitation feature in the free version, you will need to subscribe to the app for all colour profiles, lenses and other features like manual exposure control.
