Apple announced its Journal for iOS app with the iOS 17 update last year in an attempt to promote mental well-being. But despite the promising start, there have been little to no significant updates compared with other alternatives available on the App Store today. This might just be set to change as Apple could have a few AI upgrades up its sleeve for the app. Here’s what we know so far:
Journal for iOS to get AI updates: What's there to know?
The development was spotted by The Mac Observers and it details out a newly filed patent by the company. According to the report, Apple seems to have a bunch of significant AI-powered upgrades in line for the Journal iPhone app. Some of these updates include having a lot more personal prompts that could encourage a user to write.
Apart from this, it also mentions how the app will be able to pick up on workouts, photos, or events that are logged into a user’s calendar. While the Journal app does a good job of maintaining a log of your day-to-day life, several users have taken to social media after they weren’t able to stay consistent. Apple’s plan to bring in Apple Intelligence could help the app remain more proactive and nudge a user to log in when it suspects a noteworthy occurrence.

The report mentions how this could mean the app might nudge you to post if it notices you have clicked a lot of pictures from the same location. Apart from this, the app might also undergo a new, timeline-like structure where users will be able to add photos as well as music in between text to make it more personal and interesting.
Lastly, Apple Intelligence might also allow the app to ask more pointed questions based on your activities of the day, such as “How was your run?” or “How was the food at the restaurant?”.
When will the update be available for everyone?
Despite the patent, it is not clear if Apple plans to roll out any of these updates to a larger audience. However, the iOS 18 update did mention the brand’s plan to introduce new and improved features for the app in the future. But to know what they are, you might just have to wait a little more.
