iPhone ‘Underwater Mode’ may soon be a reality, suggests new patent

Apple iPhones have been some of the most versatile smartphones out there, capable of turning from pocket gaming consoles to productivity machines and professional video cameras in seconds.

That said, while iPhones can be used freely across the lands and the skies, you still can’t use them underwater. Even though newer iPhones can survive a quick dip, they aren’t exactly “waterproof” and cannot be consistently used underwater.

That could change soon, as suggested by a new Apple patent. Here’s how

iPhone Underwater Mode: What is it, and how will it work?

The newly outlined Underwater Mode is part of a 78-page iPhone patent that lists several hardware and software changes that will contribute to making the devices not just protected, but usable underwater.

This includes a new user interface that will emphasise inputs via the phone’s hardware buttons over inputs via the display. This should let users avoid the incorrect inputs (ghost touches) that are often a common occurrence when the screen is exposed to water.

Contrary to OnePlus’ approach to underwater usage, backed by new screen tech, Apple’s dedicated underwater mode will make icons and other elements bigger, and allow buttons to do the rest.

When will you actually see Underwater Mode in action?

The Underwater Mode feature is simply a patent for now, which means it could be implemented over the next couple of years, or, like many other patents, never see the light of day.

While the software implementations outlined in the patent should be easy to implement, the feature would serve no purpose if the rest of the iPhone cannot hold its own under water

This is why it is also possible that the patent becomes a reality years later when it is possible to make phones more water resistant. Perhaps, like the Apple Watch Ultra series, which can be submerged for up to 40 metres. Whether your next iPhone has this feature or not, is something only time will tell
