A speaker is a crucial component in any smartphone. After all, it is used for communicating over calls, consuming entertainment content, and using accessibility features like voice commands.
If you’re experiencing sound issues on your iPhone, it could lead to potentially bigger disruptions than you might expect in your daily use. It can be incredibly frustrating.
3 iPhone speaker issues and how to fix them
There are plenty of reasons why you may be experiencing sound issues on your iPhone. The problems stem from hardware, software, or settings. This article covers the most common iPhone speaker issues and easy ways to fix them.
1. Silent mode or low sound
2. Distorted sound
3. No sound
1. Silent mode or low sound
Put your iPhone on silent mode and forgot to disable it again? You’re not alone. Many of us who use the mute switch forget to flip it when silent mode isn’t required. If your iPhone isn’t able to play sounds, you would miss phone calls, notifications, and not be able to play media.

The first thing to fix this is to check the status of the mute switch because it disables all sounds for calls and notifications. Your phone is on silent mode if you see an orange strip. Meanwhile, the volume buttons control the overall volume of the device. Additionally, software bugs may interfere with the audio output, so it’s recommended that you update your iPhone and restart it.
2. Distorted sounds
Distorted or muffled sounds can be frustrating during calls or when playing audio. Most often, this issue is attributed to dust or dirt getting in the phone’s speaker grilles. Additionally, moisture and water can also damage the speaker components.
The quickest fix for this problem is to gently clean the grilles with a soft brush, compressed air, or a dry cloth. Usage of any sharp objects is not recommended as it may damage the speaker. If you think water has seeped into your iPhone ports and grilles, the device should be switched off and tap on it gently while pointing it down.
3. No sound
If your iPhone fails to play any sound at all, there may be a solid chance that you have left Bluetooth enabled. And thus it is connecting to other devices like speakers or headphones.
