Is your iPhone running slow? Here’s how to fix it

Do you ever notice your iPhone becoming slow or sluggish while launching an app, browsing the internet, or switching between apps? This is annoying to say the least, because it messes with your workflow, making it take far longer than usual to finish everyday tasks.

Although iPhones are known for their reliable performance, data accumulation and resource-intensive apps eventually cause them to become sluggish and make them lag. Maintaining your iPhone’s performance is crucial for both speed and longevity. Thus, to help you get things back on track, here are some simple steps to quickly boost your iPhone’s performance and help it run smoothly and efficiently once more.

Simple tips to give your iPhone a quick performance boost

Here are some of the common ways you can get your iPhone’s performance back to the way it was:

1. Free up storage space:

Your iPhone runs slower when your device storage is full or close to getting full. To free up space, consider deleting unwanted photos, videos, and unused apps (unused apps that keep data). High-resolution photos and videos usually take up a lot of space, so regularly review your photos and delete what you don’t need. Additionally, iCloud Photos can store your valuable files online, freeing up space on your device.

2. Clear Safari cache:

Browser caches store website data, to improve loading times of frequently visited websites. However, a full cache might cause lag on your phone and slow things down. To improve the overall efficiency of your browsing, clear the Safari cache once every two to three months. To do this, open Settings, tap Safari, and select “Clear History and Website Data” to delete your cache and stored website data.

3. Close unused background apps:

Most of the time, swiped-away apps can stay in the background, using up resources. Force-closing unused apps frees up memory (or the RAM) for the apps and tasks you currently need. To close unused background apps, swipe up from the bottom of the screen (or double-click the home button on older iPhones) to see the app switcher. Then, force-quit any background apps you no longer require by swiping up on their preview window.

4. Update apps and OS:

iOS updates often come with bug fixes and performance improvements that help your iPhone run efficiently and smoothly. To check for iOS updates, go to Settings > General > Software Update. You can then check for any new updates and download and install them directly, if available. You should also update your apps to ensure that the most recent versions are installed. The majority of the time, developers address bugs that could be causing programs to run slowly. To update your apps, open the App Store, tap on your profile picture, and update individual apps or select ‘Update All’ to update all of the apps on your iPhone at once.

5. Reduce background app refresh:

Apps usually update content in the background using the background app refresh feature; however, it can consume resources and drain the battery. Limiting background refresh for infrequently used apps can improve overall efficiency and performance. To reduce background app refresh, go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh. You can now opt to turn it off completely or just activate it for those apps that are necessary and need to be updated frequently.

6. Restart your iPhone:

Lastly, sometimes simply restarting your iPhone can also work wonders as it clears temporary files and refreshes the phone’s memory, thus fixing minor performance glitches and lags.
