In 2023, Apple brought in a key development by introducing the Action button in place of the Mute switch for its iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The button, positioned at the upper right side of the device, provides easy access to quick functions, such as the flashlight, voice recording and even virtual assistance. However, according to a Bloomberg report, by Apple analyst and journalist Mark Gurman, the company plans to continue the trend by introducing the Capture button for its iPhone 16 series. Here’s everything you need to know.
iPhone 16 'Capture button': What can it do?
In Gurman’s newsletter, Power On, he goes on to mention how the upcoming iPhones will have a ‘dedicated button’ to shoot videos. However, unlike the Action button, the report states how this button will instead be a capacitive button with haptic feedback. This means that it may not be a physical button and will respond to touch to initiate easy recording. It claims that the button will also include a force sensor that is equipped to handle different levels of pressure; a simple tap could launch video recording on your iPhone. Additionally, users will also be able to seamlessly switch between different functions (photos and videos) by tapping on the same.
A similar report by MacRumors also mentions how the Capture button was observed in the early prototypes of the next iPhone. The button in these designs was observed on the lower right side of the device. Additionally, in the US, this button is also said to replace the mmWave antenna below the volume and Action buttons.

While the addition of buttons on the iPhone may seem like a step back, the Capture button aims to reduce the number of steps taken to open and click using the camera app. With Apple also seemingly pushing spatial video, the move to add a dedicated button could also help further enhance its usability in the future.
