iPhone 14, iPhone 13 series to get Qi2 wireless charging support with iOS 17.2

Older iPhone users now have another reason to wait for the next iOS update

Apple’s iOS updates are known to often bring new features and changes to the table along with some necessary bug fixes. Every once in a while, though, these updates are also known to bring older devices up to speed with modern standards. That is exactly what iOS 17.2, the next significant iOS update, is set to do for the Apple iPhone 13 and 14 series.

The new iOS 17.2 standard will bring support for the Qi2 (pronounced Chee Two) wireless charging standard for the iPhone 13 series and the iPhone 14 series. For the uninitiated, Qi2 is the latest wireless charging standard which is set to make wireless power transfer both faster and easier.

Qi2 will standardise magnetic locking, something Apple already supports via its MagSafe standard (iPhone 12 and above). The new standard is also set to bring speeds faster than the regular 15W wireless charging that MagSafe is known for. Users going from a non-MagSafe charger, which caps out at 7.5W, to a Qi2 wireless charger on a supported phone will especially experience much faster wireless charging.

Qi2 is also expected to make wireless charging safe by standardising power output and safety fail-safe mechanisms across devices and accessories. This is because Qi2-certified products will also be certified by the WPC (Wireless Power Consortium) for quality. This would allow users to pair any Qi2 smartphone with and Qi2 charger and rest assured of safe, fast wireless charging.

When will iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 users get the update?

iOS 17.2 is currently on its RC (release candidate) version, which in layman’s terms is the final beta version that Apple pushes out before the update comes out to stable channel users. This means the update is likely to be released to all supported iPhones over the next few days.

If you have an iPhone 15 series device though (iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, or iPhone 15 Pro Max), Apple says your phone already supports Qi2 wireless charging. However, there aren’t any Qi2 wireless chargers available in India right now, so most users who regularly use wireless charging will have to sadly, stick to regular MagSafe compatible chargers for the best speed right now.
