iPhone 12 gets faster 15W wireless charging support with Qi2 chargers: How to enable it

iOS updates on iPhones can currently be considered the benchmark in software updates on consumer devices. Thanks to consistent system updates, iPhones are secure, feature-packed devices for most of their life cycle. However, it is a rarity to see a software update unlock a hardware function (or better it), even for Apple.

The latest example of this is the support for 15W wireless charging with non-MagSafe Qi2 chargers. Previously, iPhone 12 users could only charge wirelessly at the full capacity of 15W with Apple’s own MagSafe or any other ‘Made for MagSafe’ certified third-party chargers. However, that changes with iOS 17.4.

With the new update, iPhone 12 users can use any Qi2-certified wireless charger to get the full 15W charging speed that is possible with the smartphone’s hardware, instead of slower speeds of usually about 7.5W. However, do note that if you’re using non-MagSafe chargers that don’t support the Qi2 standard either, you’re still locked to 7.5W speeds.

The ability already arrived for iPhone 14 series and iPhone 13 series back in December 2023 with iOS 17.2, while the iPhone 15 series has support for the tech since launch. That said, it’s nice to see Apple bringing support to iPhone 12 series. which were launched all the way back in 2020.

How to get faster charging on your iPhone 12

Getting the ability to charge faster with Qi2 wireless chargers, is as easy as updating your iPhone 12 to the latest iOS 17.4 update. You probably already know how to do that, but if not, here’s how to manually update your iPhone to the latest software version.
