iOS users now get a ‘Distraction Control’ feature to hide pop-ups, banners

Don’t you hate it when you’re reading an important article, but you find yourself distracted by an annoying pop-up? Apple has introduced a solution that might just help you browse ‘distraction-free’. The company’s default browser, Safari, will soon get a Distraction Control feature that will restrict pop-ups, login requests and other random banners on the webpage. Here’s what we know about it:

Apple 'Distraction Control' feature for Safari: What's there to know?

As the name suggests, the feature is built to cut out static content on a webpage. Users with an Apple iPhone, iPad or MacBook can make the most of this feature when browsing by following a few simple steps.

Step 1: Open the Safari app on the device
Step 2: Navigate to the ‘Page Menu’ option. Within this, you will find another option titled ‘Smart Search field’
Step 3: After you click on this, Apple will bring in a search tool to highlight all that you wish to hide
Step 4: Once you tap, the element will be automatically hidden from the webpage

Apple mentions how in case you accidentally hide an element you wish to read, you also have the option to unhide it via the ‘Show Hidden Items’ option. It is also crucial to note that since the tool is not designed to be an ad-blocker, it may not be able to block ads effectively.

The feature is especially useful for obstructive elements on a webpage, which are particularly distracting when you’re reading, shopping or even scrolling.

When will the 'Distraction Control' be available on Safari?

The ‘Distraction Control’ feature is currently only available for those running the fifth beta for iOS 18. It will soon be a part of the browser once a stable version rolls out. Apple also plans to roll out other features, such as a redesigned Reader Interface, Highlights, and a revamped video viewer for users in the near future.
