iOS 18.4 is slated for release in early April this year, and with it, the AirPods Max (USB-C version) are set to receive a significant boost in sound quality and latency performance.
Apple has confirmed that iOS 18.4 will introduce new features for the USB-C AirPods Max, including support for lossless audio and ultra-low latency mode. Unfortunately, the Lightning port version of the AirPods Max will not benefit from these upgrades.
AirPods Max to get lossless audio, low-latency mode with iOS 18.4 update
With iOS 18.4, the AirPods Max – when connected via the included USB-C cable – will be capable of playing 24-bit, 48kHz lossless audio. This means Apple Music users can now enjoy the platform’s vast library of over 100 million songs in high-fidelity audio.
The update also enables musicians to create and mix using Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking, enhancing creative workflows and immersive sound design.

In addition, iOS 18.4 introduces ultra-low latency audio to the USB-C AirPods Max. According to Apple, the delay is now comparable to that of built-in speakers, offering a smoother experience for gamers and streamers alike.
These new features will be supported on USB-C AirPods Max when paired with iPhones running iOS 18.4, iPads on iPadOS 18.4, and Macs on macOS Sequoia 15.4. For the latest updates about all things tech, stay tuned to Unboxed by Croma.
