Voice Memos is getting an upgrade

With the iOS 18.2, this iPhone model is becoming the ultimate audio recording tool

Recording a song usually requires a quiet studio room with a professional microphone setup to record the intended vocals. Apple has come up with a solution to this problem. With the release of 1OS 18.2, Apple has introduced a bunch of new features, including an update for the Voice Memos app.

Originally teased at the Apple event in September 2024, Layered Recording is now available on the Voice Memos app. But there’s a catch. This new feature is only restricted to the latest iPhone 16 Pro models.

What is Layered Recording?

With Layered Recording, Apple allows users to add a vocal track layer on top of any existing instrumental recording without the need for headphones. Post iOS 18.2, users can play original ideas through the iPhone’s built-in speakers while simultaneously recording vocals with a studio-quality microphone on the iPhone 16 Pro or iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Layered Recording captures studio-quality vocals

The iPhone 16 Pro models feature the A18 Pro chip. Along with advanced processing and machine learning on the device, users can record studio-like vocals. Using Voice Memos allows users to create two individual tracks and add extra mixing.

With the help of production in apps like Logic Pro on iMac, the Layered Recordings can be synced across all devices. Users can simply drag and drop them into a Logic session on iMac.

With this update, aspiring musicians and professional can incorporate many different background instruments, such as acoustic guitar or piano, as the first layer of a recording. In fact, Logic Pro can compress that instrumental music and send it to Voice Memos for convenience.

Well-known singers like Michael Bublé, Carly Pearce and producer Greg Wells teamed up for a new track using the Voice Memo Layered Recording. The song, Maybe This Christmas, was brought together using Voice Memos on iPhone 16 Pro. The track is available on Apple Music in Spatial Audio.

It is important to note that the Layered Recording feature is only available in Voice Memos with iOS 18.2 update on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models.
