Instagram may soon allow creators to make AI versions of themselves

Soon, you may just be able to talk to AI chatbot versions of your favourite celebrity — thanks to Meta’s AI Studio. The news comes after CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced how the company will begin to display AI characters for certain creators on Instagram with the help of Meta’s AI Studio. Here’s how it will work, and everything you need to know about the new addition:

How will an AI chatbot work on Instagram?

According to the announcement, creators will be able to come up with AI characters that can interact with fans via DM (Direct Messages). A few videos during the announcement demonstrated how the AI bots will be able to answer those reaching out to them in a similar style and fashion as the the creator would.

Creators will also have a separate tab to help them create a chatbot from scratch. The process will be based on your description provided to Meta. Other factors that will help determine your tone and responses will depend upon your audience.

If you’re a fan reaching out to your favourite creator, you will see a star icon on the message tab to indicate that you are talking to an AI chatbot. Apart from that, Zuckerberg also mentioned how users will be able to see an ‘AI’ suffix or prefix with the creator’s name for additional clarity. For the initial few days, both parties will also be able to see the word ‘beta’ to indicate the project’s testing phase.

Zuckerberg went on to state how Meta eventually wants to help creators and small businesses create an ‘AI version’ of themselves. The larger aim of this goal is to promote engagement among communities and customers. He also states how he may allow creators to come up with AI characters that do not resemble them.

As of today, the project is in its early testing phase and is only available to a small subset of Instagram users. While there’s a lot of clarity awaited, there’s no denying that the approach is putting Meta headfirst into AI-driven technology for all its services.

Only recently, the company deployed Meta AI across WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and Facebook, allowing users to easily access the AI tool though their smartphones. However, we might still have to wait a little longer for the brand to unveil its larger goal with artificial intelligence.
