How to watch Reels on iPhone without downloading the Instagram app

Reels are perhaps one of the most viewed elements within the Instagram app. However, a prerequisite for watching Reels has always been the first step of downloading the Instagram app. However, for those who want to enjoy a few Reels without having to install the app, Instagram now has a way out.

Instagram beta users now have a new way for users to scroll through Reels, all without downloading the app. Here’s how.

How to watch Reels without downloading the Instagram app

Before everything else, you will need to be on the beta version of Instagram, which is version 319.0.2. This is the version of the app where Instagram makes use of App Clips (more on that later).

Once your account is tied with a version that supports App Clips, you no longer need the app and can uninstall it. Now, whenever someone sends you a Reel, you can watch it in a small App Clip without the full app.

You can even scroll through a few more related Reels and share them with friends. However, do note that after watching a few Reels, Instagram will push you towards downloading the app.

How does this work?

For the uninitiated, App Clips is an iOS feature that lets users make use of select features of an app quickly, without requiring a full install. Instagram’s own App Clip, for instance, allows you to watch a few Reels and share them, before requiring the full app for viewing more.

We’re not really sure how many people out there would go through the hassle of first getting the beta version of the app only to remove it and use the App Clips feature. That said, once the feature comes to stable versions, more people will likely have access to Reels directly without having the app installed on their smartphones.
