How to use ChatGPT with GPT-4o using the Action Button on your iPhone

Apple has been apparent about its plans to incorporate AI into its devices this year, and several reports also suggest that the company has been in talks with OpenAI for a more seamless ChatGPT integration. However, until it does, you might still be able to get the most out of the chatbot on your iPhone 15 series using the handy Action Button. 

That’s because the customisable Action Button allows you to map into to many shortcuts, one of which is directly launching a voice conversation with ChatGPT, which will now use the newly launched GPT-4o model. However, before you go about it, bear in mind that the option is only accessible via the action button, meaning only iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max users can make the most of it.

What is ChatGPT-4o and how is it different?

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT-4o at its Feels Like Magic event a few weeks ago as an update to ChatGPT 4 Turbo LLM. The platform was equipped with multi-modal abilities, which also included the ability to perceive and process video as well as speech. This development makes ChatGPT more assistant-like to users and it can now respond in various tones, and emotions, along with asking follow-up questions when required.

However, what stands out is that ChatGPT-4o ‘omni’ allows users to access it for free, albeit with limited prompts. That said, you can also subscribe to its premium version which ensures its extended abilities and unlimited prompts. 

How to create a ChatGPT voice shortcut on your iPhone

Now that you’re well-versed with what ChatGPT-4o can do, there are a few simple steps you need to follow and create a shortcut on your iPhone.

Step 1: Before you begin, ensure you have the latest version of the app installed on your iPhone. If not, go ahead and download the ChatGPT app on your device. Open the app and follow on-screen instructions for the preliminary set up.

Step 2: Navigate to the Shortcuts app on your smartphone, and tap to open it. While this app is mostly pre-installed on your iPhone, you can always visit the App Store to install it in case you don’t find it.

Step 3: Create a new shortcut within this app with the ‘+’ icon on the top right corner. Next, tap on the Add Action button. Scroll through the list of installed apps and the shortcuts they offer, and you will find the option to start a voice conversation with ChatGPT. Tap on it to select it and tap on ‘Done’.

You now have a shortcut for directly accessing ChatGPT voice. Now, we will map this shortcut to the Action Button.

How to trigger ChatGPT with GPT-4o on your iPhone using the Action Button

Once you have your shortcut created, you will be able to trigger ChatGPT voice using the Action Button on your iPhone with ease. Here’s how: 

Step 1: Navigate to Settings and select the Action Button option.

Step 2: Swipe left till you see the Shortcuts option. Tap on it and assign the ChatGPT voice conversation shortcut you just created to the Action Button.

It is important to note that ChatGPT with GPT 4o is currently only available for those subscribed to the plus tier in an unrestricted manner. If you’re using the free version of the ChatGPT app, you will only have a limited amount of prompts that you can use.
