Apple packed a lot of AI features into its Apple Intelligence suite that was announced at WWDC 2024. While several of these features are yet to go live on supported iPhones, those on the iOS 18 beta channel have been treated to some cool initial Apple Intelligence features, one of which is Writing Tools.
Writing Tools are a set of AI-powered proofreading and rewriting options that are enabled system-wide on supported iOS 18 devices. This means these tools can be used not only in Apple’s own apps (like Notes, Messages, and Mail), but in any application (like WhatsApp, Keep, and Gmail). It even works inside text columns in websites, irrespective of what browser you’re using.

But how exactly do you use the Apple Intelligence Writing Tools? What are the features that you can leverage to become a better writer? Let’s go over everything in today’s blog.
Apple Intelligence Writing Tools explained
The Writing Tools include three main options – proofread, rewrite and restructure. Users can use one or more of these on any selected text that you’ve written to correct grammar, change tonality or even restructure the format of what you’ve written.
How to use Proofread on Apple Intelligence
To proofread any written extract, simply double tap on any word of your text. The text should now be selected. You can now drag the selection markers to select precisely the text you want to proofread.
Once your selection is made, you will automatically see a ‘Proofread’ button show up on the bottom. Tap on it, and AI will scan your text for any errors. Any instances of bad grammar will then be automatically corrected and rewritten, but you will also have a revert button to go back to the original.
How to use Rewrite on Apple Intelligence
To rewrite any text extract, follow the same steps to select the target text. Next to the ‘Proofread’ button on the bottom, you should also see a ‘Rewrite’ button. You can tap on this to rewrite the text maintaining the same tonality.
However, you can also tap on the third Writing Tools icon on the right for more options. This should bring more buttons on the bottom, and you should see three new rewriting options – Friendly, Professional, and Concise. Tapping on any of these will help you rewrite your text with a different tonality, and you can choose which one depending on the setting.
For instance, you can use the Professional setting for work emails, or the Concise setting when you want to send a lot of information in a short, to-the-point form. After your text has been rewritten, you will still have the options to rewrite again, and even revert to your original version.
How to use Restructure on Apple Intelligence
The Writing Tools also let you change the structure of any text you have written. These are the four bottom-most options you see in the extended Writing Tools menu.

You can see a Summary option that will summarise any selected text for you. Two options for key pointers can list out the key pointers in your text or turn the entire text into a pointers format. Finally, a ‘Table’ option will let you convert any selected information in say, paragraph format into a tabular format, which is great for shopping lists, productivity notes, etc.
That is how you use the new Apple Intelligence Writing Tools in any app. If you’re not on the beta, you will be able to use these features once the stable iOS 18 update rolls out, on supported devices. These include the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, as well as all iPads and Macs powered by an Apple M-series chipset.
