How to turn off Gemini in Gmail

Many of Google’s apps and services have received Gemini AI features. These are designed to enhance productivity and the overall experience. One app that benefits a lot due to AI features is the Gmail app.

After all, it’s the most used email app worldwide on both Android and iOS devices. Gmail on Android phones has Gemini-powered AI tools like summariser, help me write, smart reply and compose, and more.

These work by analysing email content and suggesting context-aware results. It’s worth noting that access to AI features in Gmail depends on the account type and even Gemini subscription.

There’s no doubt that the available tools increase efficiency, improve writing quality, and reduce workload for those who handle large volumes of email. Still, there are some users who find Gemini AI inside the Gmail app intrusive.

At times, the AI-generated responses may seem impersonal or inaccurate. Additionally, privacy-conscious users may also be concerned about AI analysing their emails. The good thing is that Gemini AI features in Gmail can be disabled by users to maintain full control over their inbox and writing. Here’s how you can turn off Gemini in Gmail.

How to turn off Gemini in Gmail for individual users

Step 1: Open Gmail on the desktop

Step 2: Click on the cog wheel, which is the settings menu.

Step 3: Choose ‘see all settings’.

Step 4: In the General tab scroll below and you will find various features like smart compose, smart reply, and smart features.

Step 5: Next to each feature, there are two options to enable and disable it. Select the appropriate action to turn off AI tools.

Gemini’s paid subscriptions are expensive for Workspace users. Hence, you may need to request your organisation’s Workspace administrator to disable these features.

Administrators can turn off Gemini features in Gmail by following the below steps:

– Navigate to Apps > Google Workspace > Settings for Gmail > User Settings.

– Uncheck the box next to ‘Enable Gemini’.

By following the aforementioned steps, you can easily disable all the Gemini AI features and use Gmail like normal.
