How to split your screen and multitask on an iPad

Just like other devices, the iPad features a split screen option, officially known as ‘Split View,’ which lets you run two apps side-by-side, so you can get more done. Beyond Split View, apps that support multitasking offer even more ways to work.

For example, ‘Slide Over’ allows you to view an app in a smaller, movable window, while ‘Center Window’ gives you a focused view within certain apps. Whether you’re just starting with split screen or looking to up your multitasking game, here’s how to get the most out of it on your iPad.

How to split your screen on an iPad

There are several ways to multitask on your iPad, from splitting your screen to using different views for multiple apps. Here’s how you can use the split screen feature on an iPad.

Using the multitasking menu

1. Open any app of your choice, like Spotify or WhatsApp.

2. Tap the multitasking button at the top of the screen. 

3. Then, hit the ‘Split View’ button. Your current app will move aside, and the home screen will appear. 

4. Now, select the second app you want from the Home Screen or Dock and it will open next to the first app iSplit View.

Using the Dock

 1. Have an app open. 

2. Now, slide up from the bottom edge of the screen and release. 

3. Touch and hold an app in the Dock, then drag it to the left or right edge of the screen to enter Split View. To open it in Slide Over, drop it in the middle of the screen.

Using the app library 

 1. Tap the App Library icon on the far right of the Dock. 

2. Touch and hold an app icon, then drag it into Split View or Slide Over.

If you have a keyboard connected, you can also use ‘Spotlight’ to use the split screen feature on your iPad. Simply open an app, then press the Command + Space bar shortcut to bring up Spotlight, and type the name of the second app you want. Touch and hold the app’s icon in Spotlight results, then drag it out and place it on the left or right edge for Split View, or let it drop in the middle for Slide Over.

You can even adjust the multitasking windows on your iPad to suit your needs. To adjust Split View, drag the app divider to resize or centre it to give both apps equal space.

If you want to switch an app to Slide Over, tap on the multitasking button and select Slide Over, or drag it onto the other app. To close a Split View, hit the multitasking button and then the full-screen button, or drag the divider over the app you want to close.

With Split View and Slide Over, you can easily split your screen and use multiple apps on your iPad simultaneously, to boost your productivity.
