How to set up a personal hotspot on your mobile phone

Working from home or traveling can sometimes mean scrambling for a reliable internet connection. Thankfully, all smartphones come with a built-in solution: a personal hotspot. This nifty feature essentially turns your phone into a portable Wi-Fi router, allowing you to share your cellular data connection with laptops, tablets, or even gaming devices. Beyond just providing internet access, some personal hotspots also offer features like password protection to control who connects and data usage monitoring to keep an eye on how much data is being shared.

Whether you’re a remote worker needing a stable connection for that important video call or a traveler wanting to stay connected on the go, a personal hotspot can be a game-changer.

Here’s a comprehensive guide that will walk you through setting up your personal hotspot and turning your phone into a convenient internet access point.

How to set up your personal hotspot on your mobile phone

Here’s a step-by-step guide to setting up your personal hotspot and turning your phone into an internet access point:

1. Find the personal hotspot option

i. Android
The process might vary slightly depending on your phone’s manufacturer, but generally, you’ll find the hotspot option in your Settings app. Look for options like “Network & internet,” “Connections,” or “Mobile hotspot and tethering.”

ii. iPhone
On iPhones, navigate to your Settings app and tap the “Personal Hotspot” option.

2. Enable the hotspot

Once you’ve located the hotspot settings, find the toggle switch for “Mobile Hotspot” or “Wi-Fi Hotspot” and turn it on.

3. Secure your connection

By default, your hotspot might be open to anyone nearby. To add a layer of security, it’s highly recommended to set a password. Tap on “Configure Wi-Fi Hotspot” or similar wording and assign a strong password that others won’t be able to guess easily.

4. Connect your devices

With the hotspot now enabled and set up, open the Wi-Fi settings on your laptop, tablet, or any other device you want to connect. Look for the network name of your phone’s hotspot (which you might have customized earlier) and select it. Enter the password you created in step 3 to connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot.

And voila! You’ve not only set up your personal hotspot but also connected to it. After the initial connection, your other devices might automatically connect to the hotspot (when it’s enabled) if they have the password saved. This eliminates the need to enter the password every time you want to connect.
