How to schedule messages on an iPhone

Using an iPhone means you have access to various messaging apps like Apple’s own iMessage and third-party apps like WhatsApp or Telegram. And while there still isn’t a built-in feature to schedule a text message, several apps can be used to have a workaround for those who wish to. Whether you leverage the Shortcuts app or resort to third-party ones, you might have to look at other creative ways to be able to keep your texts scheduled on time.

How to schedule messages using the Shortcuts app

The Shortcuts app on your iPhone is a great way to add and customise functions based on what is more convenient for you. If your phone is running iOS 13 or higher, you probably already have access to this app. Here’s how to make the most of it and schedule a text message using the Shortcuts app:

Step 1: Open the Shortcuts app and tap on the Automation option at the bottom of the screen

Step 2: If you’ve never used this option before, you will see the New Automation option on your screen

Step 3: Within the Personal Automation menu, locate the Time of the Day option

Step 4: Here, you’ll be able to pick either Sunrise, Sunset or a custom schedule based on your preference. You can also choose if the message is set as recurring daily or weekly.

Step 5: Tap next to select the action you wish to schedule, and tap on Send Message

Step 6: Once you do, you will be led to a screen where you can pick the recipient and the text of your choice

Step 7: Tap on Done to confirm the scheduling of the message

Scheduling messages on your iPhone using third-party apps

If this doesn’t work for you, there are plenty of free apps for iOS that can help you automate your text messages and send them out at a selected time. Some of these include:

  • Simple SMS scheduler
  • Crew Messaging and Scheduling
  • Pro SMS Scheduler

It is essential to note that some of these may have in-app purchases or a trial period during which you can test out their efficiency.

Are there any limitations to keep in mind?

Wi-Fi reliability: Scheduling your text messages depends upon your data and Wi-Fi network settings. Any interruptions could cause it to deliver late or miss the scheduled delivery time.

Compatibility: Not every third-party app could be compatible with your iPhone; it is best to check the supported iOS version before installing it on your iPhone.

App limitations: You might only be able to use this method for your text messages and will not be able to use it on any third-party messaging apps.

With the automation feature, you can stay rest assured you have your iPhone to remind you of the most mundane tasks!
