How to reset your Fire TV Stick: A step-by-steo guide

The Fire TV Stick is one of the best and most affordable ways to turn your plain old TV into a smart TV, letting you stream your favorite shows and movies from Netflix and Hulu to Disney+ and HBO Max. But even the best devices can run into occasional snags. If your Fire TV Stick is acting sluggish, freezing frequently, or refusing to launch apps, a factory reset may prove to be a valuable troubleshooting step.

Resetting your Fire TV Stick wipes all your data and settings, effectively restoring it to its original factory condition. This can clear up glitches, resolve software conflicts, and ultimately help it to function smoothly and responsively once again. So, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to reset your Fire TV Stick.

How to reset your Fire TV Stick

You can reset a Fire TV Stick in two ways: directly on the device using the remote, or by navigating through the settings menu.

We’ll walk you through both methods below.

Reset a Fire Stick with your remote

To reset your Fire TV Stick with your remote control, simply:

1. Power on your Fire TV Stick.

2. Then press and hold the back and right directional buttons simultaneously for at least 10 seconds.

3. A pop-up message will appear on your screen asking you to confirm the reset. You’ll see options like ‘Reset’ or ‘Cancel.’ To proceed with the reset, press the Select button (the button in the center of the navigation circle) on the confirmation message.

4. Wait for the Fire TV Stick to reset and don’t unplug or turn off your device during the process.

After resetting, your Fire TV Stick will restart and return to its factory settings. You can then go through the entire initial setup process again, just like you would on a new Fire Stick

Reset a Fire Stick manually

The second way involves resetting your Fire Stick manually through the settings menu. Here’s how to do it:

1. Press the Home button on your remote.

2. Then press the right directional button to highlight the gear icon (Settings).

3. Press down the select button to open the Settings menu. (For older Fire OS: Access Settings from top-right corner)

4. Select ‘My Fire TV’ (or ‘Device’ or ‘System’ on older models).

5. Scroll down and select ‘Reset to Factory Defaults.’

6. Enter your PIN if prompted.
