How to replace Refrigerator ice and water filter

The quick and easy fix for cleaner water from your refrigerator

How to replace Refrigerator ice and water filter

Just like most home appliances, your refrigerator has an ice and water filter to keep your water clean and your ice fresh. But over time, it can get clogged with impurities, which affects both the taste and quality of your water and ice. A good filter helps remove contaminants, weird tastes, and odours, so you always get fresh, clean water. That’s why replacing it on time is essential to maintaining great water quality. In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how to replace your filter so you can keep enjoying crisp, refreshing water.

How to replace refrigerator ice and water filter

A refrigerator water filter sits inside your appliance, typically in a compartment or drawer, and helps purify the water you drink and use for ice. But over time, it gets clogged with impurities and needs to be replaced.

If you’re not sure how to do it, don’t worry, it’s easier than you think! The tricky part is knowing what type of filter your fridge uses. Most refrigerators have one of three common filter types: twist-on, push-in, or an inline filter connected to the water line. Below, we’ll break down the step-by-step process for each type so you can swap out your old filter and keep your fridge running smoothly.

Replacing Twist-On refrigerator water filter

This type of filter is screwed into place, so replacing it involves a simple twist-and-lock mechanism.

1. Locate the filter

The filter is usually inside the fridge, near the top or back. Some models place it in a separate compartment or a bottom drawer. If you’re unsure, your manual will have the exact location.

2. Prepare the area

When you remove the filter, a little water might spill out. Place a towel or small bowl underneath to catch any drips and avoid a mess.

3. Remove the old filter

Grip the filter and twist it counterclockwise about a quarter turn until it loosens. Then, pull it straight out. Some filters might be a little tight, so apply steady pressure but don’t force it as damaging the filter housing can lead to leaks.

4. Insert and test the new filter

Take the new filter, align it with the slot, and push it in. Then, twist it clockwise until it locks securely into place. If it doesn’t turn easily, double-check the alignment and try again.

Now, turn the water back on and flush the system by running water through the dispenser for a few minutes. This removes air bubbles and any loose carbon particles. Finally, check for leaks and if you see any, twist the filter a little tighter.

Replacing Push-In refrigerator water filter

This type of filter is held in place by a spring mechanism and is typically found inside a compartment. To replace a push-in refrigerator water filter:

1. Locate the filter

You’ll usually find it inside the refrigerator, often near the bottom front or in a dedicated compartment. Look for a button or a small release tab next to the filter.

2. Prepare the area

Just like with twist-on filters, place a towel underneath to catch any water drips.

3. Release and remove the old filter

Press the release button or push the filter itself and it should pop out or slide forward. If your filter has a cap, remove it and set it aside.

4. Insert and test the new filter

If your old filter had a cap, attach it to the new one. Push the new filter into place until you hear a click. It should feel secure, but if it doesn’t click, remove it and try again. Run water through the dispenser for a few minutes to flush out air and debris. This removes any trapped air and loose particles. Check for leaks and make sure the water flows normally.

Replacing the Inline refrigerator water filter (installed in the water line)

If your refrigerator has an external water filter attached to the water supply line (usually at the back or bottom), follow these steps:

1. Pull the refrigerator out and unplug it

Carefully slide your refrigerator away from the wall to access the water line. Unplug the refrigerator for safety before starting.

2. Prepare for water spillage

Inline filters can hold some water, so place a bucket or towel underneath before removing the filter to catch any drips.

3. Remove the old filter

Find the filter along the water line and disconnect it. Some models use quick-connect fittings that you can release by pressing a button, while others require pliers to loosen the connections. Once detached, remove any fittings that need to be transferred to the new filter.

4. Install and test the new filter

Attach the new filter to the water line, making sure the inlet and outlet sides are connected correctly. Tighten any fittings and ensure everything is secure. Now, turn the water supply back on and run water through the dispenser for a few minutes to flush out any trapped air or debris. Check all connections for leaks. If you see any, turn off the water, tighten the fittings, and try again.

Many modern fridges have a filter replacement indicator. After installing the new filter, reset it by pressing and holding the reset button for a few seconds. Happy filtering!
