Google Assistant has long been the go-to AI companion for Android users, but the landscape is shifting. Google’s Gemini is emerging as a promising alternative, with the potential to deliver more nuanced and informative responses. While still in its early stages, Gemini’s capabilities are already generating great excitement.  If you’re ready to explore this new AI on your Android device, this guide will walk you through the transition from Google Assistant to Gemini.

Understanding the transition

Replacing Google Assistant with Gemini involves a few straightforward steps. However, it’s important to note that Gemini’s availability might be limited depending on your region and device compatibility.

The first step is to download and install the Gemini app from the Google Play Store. Search for “Gemini AI” and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Setting up Gemini and making it the default assistant

Once installed, open the Gemini app and follow the setup process. This usually involves signing in with your Google account and granting necessary permissions. Take your time to explore the settings and personalise Gemini to your preferences.

Navigate to your device’s settings and find the “Apps” or “Applications” section. Locate “Default apps” or “Assist & Voice input” option. Here, you’ll find the “Assist app” setting. Tap on it and select “Gemini” from the list of available options.

Testing Gemini

Now that Gemini is your default assistant, try interacting with it using voice commands or by long pressing the home button. Experiment with different queries and observe how Gemini responds compared to Google Assistant. If you encounter any issues or simply prefer Google Assistant, you can easily switch back.
