Gmail gives you the option to recover your account on your smartphone, laptop or other device in just a few steps. If you are wondering how to do that, here’s our guide on how to recover a Gmail account. 

How to recover Gmail account

There are different scenarios where Gmail account recovery is required. Let’s understand them and then get into the recovery steps.

When you forget your password

Forgetting your password is a rather common scenario, and for that, Gmail gives you the option to reset another password. Follow the below steps to create a new Gmail password.

Step 1: Go to Gmail on a web browser and enter your registered username or email ID. Click on Next. 

Step 2: Go to the next screen, where you will be asked to enter the password. Since you have forgotten your password, click on the ‘Forgot password?’ option. 

Step 3: Then, you need to confirm the mobile number registered with your email ID. This will help keep your account safe and for Google to know that it’s actually just you trying to access the account.

Step 4: Once your mobile number is confirmed, you will be asked for a verification code received through text or call. 

Step 5: Enter the verification code. If you are signed in on other devices, you will also be asked to tap Yes, it was me or match a particular number on the device and the sign-in screen. 

Step 6: Once successfully verified, create a new and strong alphanumeric password inside the Create password box. Type out the password again to confirm it and click on the Save password button. 

Step 7: On the next screen, you will get your mobile number and email ID details. If you want to continue using them, click on Yes, confirm button.

When you forget your Email ID

Forgetting your email ID is rare, but Google knows this is possible. Hence, follow the below steps to recover your account if you’ve forgotten your email ID. 

Step 1: The first step is to keep the information ready. It will require your full name, registered mobile number and any other recovery email that you may have linked to this account previously.

Step 2: Go to Gmail, and on the sign-in page, click on Forgot email below the Email or Phone text box.

Step 3: Then enter the phone number or recovery email ID you might have added before to receive a verification code.

Step 4: Enter the code and click on Next.

Step 5: On the next screen, enter the First name and Last name in the boxes and click on Next.

Step 6: Then you will be redirected to a verification code page where you need to click on Send. 

Step 7: Enter the verification code that appears on the recovery email ID or mobile number and click Next. 

Step 8: This will display the accounts linked to your phone number. Click on the account you wish to recover and use. 

Step 9: Type the password for the account and log in.

Recovering your Gmail account is easier than what it initially looks like. These simple steps will help you get back to your Gmail account quickly.
